She served as a teacher from 1931 to 1948 at St. Mary’s High School in Kolkata (Now calcutta.) In 1948 she got permission from her superiors to leave the convent and devote herself to work for the poorest of the poor in the slums.

Her first course of action was to gather the children from the slums of Kolkata and start to teach them. In 1950 her group received official status as a religious community. Members took the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, but they added a fourth vow- to give free service to the most poor. In 1957 the Missionary of charity received significant publicity.

Mother Teresa’s group continued to expand through out the 1970s. They opened new missions in Amman of Jardan, London of England, New York. By 1979 Mother Teresa’s group established their mission more than 200 different operations in over twenty five countries.
