HOT QUESTIONS 1.Refer to TEXT. 2.Make your own controversial COMMENT about this part of the text. What do YOU think and why? 3.Ask a QUESTION that can be discussed and debated. EXAMPLE: Tim Donovan claims, “More and more, (learning) seems like the key (to happiness).” So many students today appear to care more about doing just enough to earn whatever grades they deem necessary than about actually learning and improving reading and writing skills. Based on what Donovan says, this would indicate students are missing out on more than just points in a gradebook. Is it important for students to not simply work toward earning their grades but also to truly push themselves to improve and to enjoy doing it? Why or why not?

Argument Review Stance: Your opinion about the essay topic and should be presented in your thesis, along with the topic name and each of the body body paragraph topics. Counterargument: The opposing opinion. Claim: Your opinion about paragraph topic. Evidence: An example of your claim. World history Current world events US history Current US events Classic literature Your experience Warrant: An explanation about why or how your evidence proves your claim to be true. OKAY GOOD BETTER EVEN BETTER STILL BETTER BEST

One might insist that, with so many drivers and passengers at risk, safety on the roads is of the utmost importance. However, seatbelt laws are already in place and do not need to be more strictly enforced. My mom has told me stories about how she and her siblings used to ride in the back of my grandfather’s truck and scream at the top of their lungs while driving down the highway. In 2015, this sight would move a concerned citizen to call 911 because people take driving safety more seriously now than they used to. Faster speed limits and more cars on the roads over the past 30 years have resulted in stricter seatbelt laws that have preserved and saved lives. So people are much more aware now of how important it is to buckle up. With the seatbelt issue already being effectively handled, stricter enforcement of seatbelt laws would only require law enforcement agencies to put time and money where it isn’t needed, thereby taking the focus off more important and urgent matters.

ASSUMPTION: A statement that your reader would likely agree with. In 2015, this sight would move a concerned citizen to call 911 because people take driving safety more seriously now than they used to. BACKING: The reason why we would all agree with the assumption. Faster speed limits and more cars on the roads over the past 30 years have resulted in stricter seatbelt laws that have preserved and saved lives. So people are much more aware now of how important it is to buckle up. EFFECT: How either going along with your claim or going against is would affect people or the planet. With the seatbelt issue already being effectively handled, stricter enforcement of seatbelt laws would only require law enforcement agencies to put time and money where it isn’t needed, thereby taking the focus off more important and urgent matters.

ARGUMENT PARAGRAPH Due Friday!!! Tim Donovan claims, “More and more, (learning) seems like the key (to happiness).” So many students today appear to care more about doing just enough to earn whatever grades they deem necessary than about actually learning and improving reading and writing skills.
