1. Bellwork 9/3/04-9/6/04 Today we will be looking at the branches of science! On a scratch piece of paper I would like you to write down all the branches you can think of. Hint: Earth Science is one of them!

2. Branches of Science There are many branches of science. The main branches are Life Science and Physical Science. Life has to do with organisms, while Physical has to do with anything NOT alive. Pretty easy!

3. Earth Science Earth science involves the study of the Earth. Sub categories are:  Geology (fossils, seismology, etc)  Meteorology (Weather)  Oceanography (Ocean organisms)  Paleontology (Prehistoric life- -forms)

4. Biology The study of living things. Sub categories are:  Anatomy  Behaviorism  Physiology  Botany

5. Physical Science The study of matter and energy. Subcategories are:  Chemistry  Physics  Electricity  Energy  Gravity  Machines

6. The Rest…  Engineering  Mathematics (geometry)  Computer Science  Zoology  Astronomy  Medicine  We forget any??????

7. Finding an Area! Find something that is in your area of interest. Example: If you like skateboards, you may be interested in engineering, physics, machines. Think about your hobbies & interests Make a connection to a branch of science.

8. Deadline Next week we will start narrowing our focus. THIS week you need to make an important decision: What branch of science MOST interests you? Between now and our next class period you need to pick an area.

9. Due next class period From the given branches of science, pick an area which MOST interests you. You do not have to think of a research topic, yet, but you should decide on an area by next class meeting. On a piece of paper write down you area and turn it in next class meeting.

10. Lab for Today! Today's lab will ask you to make observations, ask questions, and to write procedures for the lab itself.

11. Background I have an aquarium filled with water. I also have 2 different cans of soda, Coke and Diet Coke.

12. Your Report Page Top right corner: Name, Period, Date Top 1/3 rd = Observations Middle 1/3 rd = Procedures Bottom 1/3 rd = Data Back: Paragraph conclusion, tie it all together.

13. Observations On your own piece of paper, write down what is different between the two cans of soda. You are comparing and constrasting each can. Think about LOOK, FEEL, WEIGHT, etc. Anything you observe, write down. Compare what you write to your teammates.

14. Questions Obviously, we are going to be doing SOMETHING with the two cans of soda and the tank full of water. What questions could you ask given these materials?

15. Procedure After your observations and thinking of questions to ask you need to label the next part of your report, Procedures. As a team, talk about WHAT steps would be taken to answer the questions you came up with. Write down in order the steps you will take to answer those questions.

16. Experiment We will be using my questions. My question is “What will happen if I place both cans of soda into the tank?” So my procedure will be to weigh each can, record the weights. Next I will record the volume of each can, which is the same.

17. Data Before I do the next step of my procedure, I must record the information I have already into a data table. SodaWeightVolumeWeight/ Volume = Density Coke Diet Coke

18. Observations I have placed the cans of soda into the tank. What happened? Record what you see. Write in your data table which floated, which sank. SodaWeightVolumeWeight/ Volume = Density Coke Diet Coke Float? Yes or No?

19. Analysis Now we KNOW what happened, at least what we observed. Using the data collected (observations, measurements, etc) write down a description of WHAT happened. Confer with your teammates.

20. Conclusion We have performed our experiment, we have collected data, and analyzed it. Now we must tie it all together by making a conclusion. Why did one float over the other?

21. Facts: Coke contains sugar, while Diet Coke contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener. Water has a density of 1, while the can of Coke was of greater density, the can of Diet Coke less dense.

22. Facts Since the the density decides if something will float, ANYTHING more dense that water will sink, anything less dense will float.

23. Place in team folder Each team has its own folder, all assignments turned in will always be placed in the team folder. Be sure you know which team you are.

24. Team Folder On the front of the folder is a #, this is your team #. Each class period, the first person in the room should get this folder from the gray file box.

25. Returned Assignments All work I grade will be in the team folder. I NEVER remove any papers from the folder! From the moment you turn them in, they always stay with the folder.

26. Turn in Team Folder Now we will turn in the team folder. Today person #1 will take the team folder to the gray crate, and place it inside of the green hanging folder for your class.

27. Popcorn We will now answer some questions about what we did today. Take a moment to discuss with your team what we covered, be ready to be called on in a moment.
