2 2 WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? Sharing information – ideas, feelings, thoughts, needs, etc. etc. Sharing takes place from one person to another in a way that it is understandable. It involves systematic and continuous process of speaking, listening and understanding.

3 3 WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? Communication is a process which involves sharing of information between people through a continuous activity of speaking, listening, and understanding.

4 4 WHY IS COMMUNICATION IMPORTANT? Talking is a basic instinct, but communication is a learned activity. Improving upon the ability to talk is to speak well and communicate effectively. Communication connects people together in the society. Modifies behavior & brings change.

5 5 WHY IS COMMUNICATION IMPORTANT? Communication plays an important role in almost all aspects of life. People have to communicate with each other to exchange information, make decisions, talk about new ideas, plans, proposals etc. Helps obtaining employment & successful job performance.

6 6 WHY IS COMMUNICATION IMPORTANT? Working Hrs. spent in communication: 69% on speaking and listening. 17% on reading. 14% on writing. We live in a communication revolution - in an age of increasing talk. Therefore, need to learn to talk well & talk wise.

8 8 Problems occur in organizations due to failure in Communication Process. Coaching, coordinating, counseling, evaluating and supervising requires understanding Communication Process. Stages involved are: Idea, Encoding, The Channel, Decoding, Feedback.

9 9 THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS 1.Idea –Information exists in the mind of the sender (source). 2.Encoding –Source initiates a message by encoding the idea. (e.g. speak, write, gesture, expressions).

10 10 THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS (Contd.) 3.The Channel –Medium that links the sender with the receiver. –Oral or a written medium. –Dependent on effectivity. –Immediate transmission, feedback, permanent record, degree of negotiation, destination, and nature of the content. –Communication by more than one channel.

11 11 THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS (Contd.) 4.Decoding –Act of understanding messages. –Conversion of sound waves into ideas. –Processes of decoding: Content  Language Context  Paralanguage

12 12 THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS (Contd.) Content –Spoken and written words. –Words have different meanings. Context –The way the message is delivered. –Causes message to be misunderstood. –We believe what we see than what we hear.

14 14 THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS (Contd.) Noise –Can hinder the development of thought. –Encoding may be faulty. –Transmission may be interrupted. –Inaccurate reception.
