What Is National Board Certification? A voluntary process established by NBPTS Achieved through a rigorous, performance- based assessment aimed to measure what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do while demonstrating how their performance improves student achievement An advanced credential that complements a state license Three years of teaching experience required for candidacy Open to all- public, private, charters

The Research…  Majority of studies indicate that National Board Certification makes a significantly positive impact on teacher performance and student learning, engagement and achievement  Teachers who pursue certification show significant improvement in their teaching practice, whether they achieve certification or not  All else being equal, teachers who have achieved National Board Certification helped their students achieve larger testing gains than did colleagues without the certification

YOUR performance is measured against NBPTS “tools” and processes NBPTS Core Propositions NBCT certificate standards in (disciplinary fields) Architecture of Accomplished Teaching Portfolio Entries ◦ Evidence of Impact on Students ◦ Documentation Assessment Center Exercises

Five Core Propositions Teachers are committed to students and their learning Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience Teachers are members of learning communities

Revisions to the National Board Certification Process

Share upcoming revisions to the National Board Certification process Discuss the revision roll-out schedule Goals of this discussion

Why revise the National Board Certification process? What is changing through the revisions? When will the revisions occur? Agenda

Incorporate the latest research. Just as we ask teachers to be reflective in their practice, we are reflecting on the certification process to ensure it mirrors the evolving nature of the profession and current research on best practices in teaching. The process was last revised in 2001. Remove barriers. We are working with National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and other experts in the profession to remove barriers in the process that have nothing to do with whether a teacher is accomplished. Why revise the process?

1994 6 Portfolio Entries 4 Assessment Center Exercises 2001 4 Portfolio Entries 6 Assessment Center Exercises 2014 4 Components (Including Assessment Center Exercises) History of Revisions to National Board Certification process

What’s not changing? Though the process is changing, our principles remain the same. We will continue to emphasize: National Board Standards Five Core Propositions Architecture of Accomplished Teaching A performance-based, peer-review model Content knowledge and commitment to student learning

What’s changing in the process? Flexibility - While teachers can complete the entire certification process in one year once it is fully implemented, some may choose to do so over several years if that fits better with other demands on a teacher’s time. Efficiency - While maintaining the same level of rigor, the process will be grouped into four components. Affordability - The total cost of certification will decrease to $1900, with each of the four components costing $475. Candidates will have the option to pay for and submit components separately.

The revised process for National Board Certification will be comprised of 4 components: The Design of the Revised Process 38 Component 1 Content Knowledge Component 2 Differentiation in Instruction Component 3 Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment Component 4 (C4) Effective and Reflective Practitioner

What this means for 2013-14 candidates The 2013−14 candidate cycle is the last time that first-time candidates will apply using the existing certification process. Candidates must apply by February 28, 2014 to pursue certification in the current process. – Retake candidates will continue under the process they started.

What this means for 2014-15 candidates and beyond Applications for the revised certification process will be available to new candidates in March 2014. Exact date is TBD. The revised certification will be rolled out over time, with the first two components for most certificate areas available for the 2014−15 school year. Note: Due to the ongoing revision of the Career and Technical Education (CTE), candidates for the CTE certificate will begin the new process in 2015- 16. The World Language (WL) and Music Content Knowledge component will be delayed until 2015-16 but Differentiation in Instruction will be available in 2014-15.
