9 685 Arabs invade North Africa. They bring Islam. 1465 Jews and Muslims expelled from Spain settle in Morocco 1660 The Alawite dynasty takes over. The family still rules Morocco today 1860 Spain occupies northern Morocco. 1912 Under the Treaty of Fez, France becomes a protector of Morocco. 1956 Morocco gains independence from France and Spain. But Spain retains control of some territories. 1961 Hassan II becomes king. He rules until his death in 1999. 1976 Moroccan and Algerian troops battle in Western Sahara. 1999 King Hassan dies, and his son, Mohammed VI, comes to power.

10 Morocco gained independence in 1956 after more than 40 years under the French. King Mohamed V reigned until he died in 1961. His reign was defined by human rights abuses. He treated people harshly that didn’t follow his rules
