Art Careers Fashion Designer

What does a fashion designer do? Fashion designers design clothing and accessories. Some high fashion designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. Other high fashion designers cater to specialty stores or high fashion department stores. These designers create original garments, as well as those that follow established fashion trends. Most fashion designers, however, work for apparel manufacturers, creating designs of men's, women's, and children's fashions for the mass market.

Where does a fashion designer work? Fashion Designers work in a number of different industries, depending on their design specialty. Fashion designers generally work for textile, apparel, and pattern manufacturers; wholesale distributors of clothing, furnishings, and accessories; or for fashion salons, high- fashion department stores, and specialty shops.

What does it take to work in fashion design? Individuals in the design field must be creative, imaginative, persistent, and able to communicate their ideas in writing, visually, and verbally. Because tastes in style and fashion can change quickly, designers need to be well-read, open to new ideas and influences, and quick to react to changing trends. Problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and under pressure are important traits. People in this field need self-discipline to start projects on their own, to budget their time, and to meet deadlines and production schedules.

THE RED DRESS PROJECT The Red Dress, the centerpiece of The Heart Truth, is a red alert that inspires women to take action to protect their heart health. The primary message driving The Heart Truth campaign is: "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear—It's the #1 Killer of Women."

Facts about women and cardiovascular diseases Cardiovascular disease (CVD) ranks first among all disease categories in hospital discharges for women. Nearly 39 percent of all female deaths in America occur from CVD, which includes coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. CVD is a particularly important problem among minority women. The death rate due to CVD is substantially higher in black women than in white women. In 2003, CVD claimed the lives of 483,842 females; cancer (all forms combined) 267,902. In 2003, coronary heart disease claimed the lives of 233,886 females compared with 41,566 lives from breast cancer and 67,894 from lung cancer. 38 percent of women compared with 25 percent of men will die within one year after a heart attack. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability; an estimated 15 to 30 percent of stroke survivors are permanently disabled. Misperceptions still exist that CVD is not a real problem for women.

Why a Red Dress? The Red Dress was designed to build awareness that women are at risk for heart disease, and motivate them to take action to reduce their risk. As an icon, the Red Dress tested well with women across the country who cited its ability to get attention, convey the seriousness of heart disease, and change the perception that it is only a man's issue.

The Heart Truth introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness at the campaign's launch in 2002.
