SCORING CLINIC PREFACE  This is a tutorial created to assist junior volleyball players with keeping score using SCVA/USA Volleyball scoring procedures.  Text describing events on the court will appear first.  A score sheet will show how to score these events.

 This presentation is the overall process of scoring a match, expectations, & how to guide the score keeper. SCORING CLINIC PREFACE  It is very common in club volleyball for refereeing (work) team to need to supply up to six players to help with the match: two-line judges (with or without flags), one person to flip the score board, one person to track the Liberoes using the Libero control sheet, one person to keep the official score using score keeper’s sheets, and sometimes a down-ref or R2 (w/ whistle).  Score-keeping, Libero tracking, and line judging will be covered by this presentation.

SCORING CLINIC PREFACE  Supplies needed: To practice score- keeping, have blank score sheet(s), a blank Libero control sheet, a black (or blue) pen, and a pencil at hand.  The objective is to learn the proper procedures for recording events that occur during the match and better prepare you for real life score keeping and Libero tracking.  The more you practice, the better (and more comfortable you’ll become).

SCORING CLINIC PREFACE  The score sheet used in this clinic reflects the current model being used by SCVA/ USA Volleyball.  However, if a referee requires special notation on a score-sheet, the score keeper should follow the direction of the referee.  Never hesitate to ask the down referee a question (before a set begins or at time- outs).

BLANK SCORESHEET  Use CAPITAL LETTERS throughout the sheet.  All information prior to the first serve and after the last point should be in PEN.  In the OFFICIALS section, LAST NAME, FIRST NAME.  Tournament DATE should be SIX characters, mm/dd/yy (example: 09/18/14.  All TIMES should be in INTERNATIONAL TIME (ex: 9am=0900, 2:15pm=1415)  After coin toss, place an “X” in THREE places (for both set 1 & set 2): 1. through the encircled S of the serving team. 2. through the encircled R of receiving team. 3. in SERVICE ROUNDS box 1 for Position I player of the Receiving team. TIPS AND REMINDERS

BLANK SCORESHEET  You may use PENCIL from the first serve until the final point is recorded.  Make a small CHECK MARK over the number in the Service Rounds box for each player’s FIRST SERVE (if legal).  THREE actions on SUBSTITUTION: 1. Slash the player #, replace with sub player #. 2. Write the Score at Change (sub team score first). 3. Slash the team sub.  After the LAST POINT is recorded (begin using PEN): 1. Record END time in INTERNATIONAL TIME 2. Circle BOTH final EXIT SCORES (Service Rounds section only) 3. Record team names and scores of set in the RESULTS section. 4. Hourglass unused points in the Points columns

BLANK SCORESHEET 5. Check score sheet for errors and proper count of substitutions. 6. SIGN score sheet AFTER all information has been VERIFIED. 7. Obtain Captain/Coach signatures, then offer to 1 st referee for SIGNATURE. TIPS AND REMINDERS

SCORING CLINIC PREFACE Below is a brief overview for when to use a pen and when to use a pencil while scorekeeping.

SAMPLE VOLLEYBALL MATCH  This is a match between SO-CAL JRS VOLLEYBALL CLUB and SURFSIDE VOLLEYBALL CLUB played at AMERICAN SPORTS CENTER on MARCH 7.  The first referee/R1 is JOANNA SMITH, the second referee/R2 is ROBERT THOMPSON and the scorer is (YOUR NAME).  So-Cal Jr.’s won the coin toss & decided to SERVE FIRST.

PRIOR TO FIRST SERVE (2 of 2) SMITH, JOANNA THOMPSON, ROBERT YOUR NAME (last, first) CLUB X SCVA Fill in the information box with the Officials’ names (last name, first name), your name (do not sign the score card until after the set is over and you have verified the card). The “Work Team” is the team that is assisting with score-keeping, line judging, etc.

Libero Control Sheet 5c 8 7 13 15 18 4c 1 12 24 6 1114919 23 Do not use slash marks when recording Libero replacements (these are not substitutions). When the starting Libero replaces a player, write L next to the exiting player. If the second Libero replaces the starting Libero, write R next to L. Remember: The SAME player must replace the Libero as the Libero replaced first. (the number replacing the Libero must match that of the player that the Libero replaced). Enter the Libero number(s) in the Libero box and the starting players’ numbers in the SP Column.

Double Check  R1/R2, scorer and libero tracker all compare the submitted line-up sheets to the score sheets and the Libero Control Sheet (for both teams) to verify that they show the same information.

As the Set Starts: LIBERO CONTROL SHEET 5c 8 7 13 15 18 4c 1 12 24 6 1114919 23 L L Prior to the first serve, both teams replace a back row player with their team’s Libero. -Team A replaces #15 with their primary Libero (L). -Team B replaces #6 with their primary Libero (L). (notice no slash marks on #’s 15, and 6).

AFTER FIRST SERVE After the R1 beckons for the first serve: -Record the start time of the set, using 00:00 international format. -(in this case, 08:02am=08:02) -When the first server contacts the ball for service, tic the number in the box. -If a point is scored slash the number in the Points section. - When a loss of rally occurs write the exit score in the box then slash the next point in the opponents Points column. 1 08:02 (Example: Do not write on your score sheet yet) RECORD THE START TIME NOW (08:02).

REMEMBER  The Official Scorer is part of the team with the R1, R2, Libero Tracker, and Line Judges.  The score on the official score sheet is always considered to be the correct score!  If there is a discrepancy and the R1 or R2 has definite knowledge, the score sheet may be adjusted. If the issue cannot be resolved, the official score sheet is the final answer.  The scorer shouldn’t hesitate to ask the R1/R2 for help if/when it is needed – any issues need to be fixed while they are small and still manageable.

QUESTIONS ?

LINE JUDGING Position: 1. Each line judge shall stand near the intersection of the left sideline with the end line, and move so they have a clear view of both the end line and the sideline. 2. Line judges shall hold the same positions relative to the court throughout the match. 3. Line judges shall stand at the intersection of the attack line and sideline, on their respective side of the court, nearest the first referee during timeouts. The line judge on the serving team’s side of the net shall hold the game ball.

Responsibilities: 1. Determining at the moment of contact for the serve whether the server touches the end line or the floor outside the lines marking the width of the serving area (foot fault). 2. Indicating when the serve, or any played ball, crosses the net not entirely between the net antennas. 3. Indicating when the ball touches the net, net antennas, and/or net supports not entirely between the net antennas. 4. Indicating whether a ball is inbounds or out of bounds when it lands on or near any line for which the line judge is responsible. 5. Indicating when a player touches a ball that is going out of bounds on the player’s side of the net. 6. Communicating with the first referee when asked, when the ball touches the ceiling or overhead obstruction, if out of the view of the referees.

Signals: When the ball lands in. When the ball lands out. When the ball is touched before going out. Touched an outside object, traveled outside of the antenna, or foot fault by any player during service. Used when you did not see the ball (rarely used). LINE JUDGING

Tips to being a successful line judge: 1. Pay attention to the game: As Line Judge, you are an important part of the refereeing team. Treat this responsibly with respect. 2. You have the best view: Never be afraid to make a strong call or close call. You are looking at things from a different point of view than the Head Referee or anyone else. 3. Make your call quickly and without hesitation: Call them as YOU see them. Never look to a team’s bench or the stands before making a call. That looks like you were not sure or you’re looking to see what someone else wants you to call it. 4. Always be honest and judge with integrity: Never lie or make calls to benefit one team or the other. Honor the game of volleyball by always being truthful in your calls, no matter the situation or circumstance. NEVER LET THE CROWD OR AN OPOSING TEAM INFLUENCE YOUR DECISION. 5. Don’t be embarrased if you didn’t see a call: If you missed the play (embarrassing, but still you need to admit it to the HEAD OFFICIAL) 6. Get low to see the ball hit the line: Remember that the volleyball is round and only a small portion actually touches the ground. This small portion must touch some part of the line in order to be IN the court. Thus, it is helpful to be low to the ground when making a close call so that you can see more of the underside of the ball. 7. Have fun: Enjoy yourself, you have one of the best views! LINE JUDGING
