1 Options, applications, and procedures 2013/14: For applications to go abroad 2014/15 Andrea Klaus and James Hodkinson The Year Abroad in Germany and Austria

2 What are my options..... what should I do? Study at a partner university in Germany or Austria via the Erasmus scheme (1 or 2 Semesters)....... teach as an ELA (English Language Assistant) at a German or Austrian school via the British Council...... take a work placement, usually in conjunction with one semester at a university

3 - German degrees (except Ger/Bus): - students wanting to go to Berlin, Cologne or Munich have to commit to the whole year, i.e. they will not be allowed to go on a work placement in the second half of the y.a - Ger/Bus students normally choose a university placement in the first half and a work placement in the 2nd half of the y.a - See website for further info on partner unis - Forms have to be returned by 29th November University placements

4 - You will know by January which university you can go to - We will contact the unis in Germany/Austria - The formal registration process will take place in the spring (via international office) University placements - 2 -

5 British Council Assistantships You apply via the German Department to the British Council during the Autumn term Applications are competitive, a very tight timeline. By Spring 2013, successful candidates informed: rejections and waiting lists. Teach up to 12 hours per week, conversation Salary, health insurance, plus Erasmus status and money Help with accommodation/ Betreuungslehrer/in Apply by preference to Bundesland – all areas

Incomplete, unsigned, illegible forms rejected outright

7 Assistantships: Applications Timeline Final sign-up list by Friday Nov 1 st 12 noon Draft form checked on Thursday 14 th, from 09:30 to 11:30 and Friday 15 th Nov from 11-12, by JH – drop-in sessions in H216 NB Info to personal tutors as soon as you decide! Applications handed in by 1pm Friday 22 nd November
