IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping IR-CAP Condition Assessment Program Indian Register of Shipping

IR CAPIR CAP The Purpose of this Presentation... To help you understand CAP Rating To explain the Rating Process To help you know the factors that affect the rating

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Independent assessment carried out at the request of ship owner. One or more aspects, viz. Ship’s Structure, Machinery & Cargo Systems can be assessed – as desired. The extent of survey is larger than that carried out at ESP or CAS survey and the Report is very detailed.

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Detailed documentary evidence is now available to all interested parties. Assessment is carried out on as-is-basis, considering all repairs & renewals that have been carried out during the CAP survey They can now judge the condition of vessel better & have better confidence on her ability to provide good service without any repairs in the near future. Insurers Ship Charters Cargo Shippers Terminal Operators

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP 1: no deficiencies and/or only superficial reductions from as new or current rule scantlings CAP 2: deficiencies of a minor nature not requiring correction or repairs and/or scantlings significantly above class renewal limits CAP Rating After the assessment a CAP rating is assigned to the ship on a scale of 1- 4 CAP 3: deficiencies which do not require immediate corrective action, and / or hull scantlings, although generally above class renewal levels, are with substantial corrosion CAP 4: deficiencies which affect the ship’s potential to remain in class, and / or scantlings at or below the class renewal levels

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Benefits to Ship Owner… The CAP survey also provides the ship owner, a basis to plan the maintenance that ensures continued asset utilization. The Ship owner can obtain better charters by demonstrating better quality of his ships.

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Process - Hull

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Process - Hull Local Strength Rating Longitudinal Strength Rating Total Hull Rating Satisfactory survey of Hull Fittings Anchor, Cable, Windlass, Rudder & Steering Gear, Weather-tightness, Shipside valves Tank Testing is a pre-requisite ! and

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Process - Hull Thickness measurement readings greatly influence Local Strength Rating A rating could be derived by assessing the TM readings statistically, for a local structure A rating could be derived by systematically evaluating each significant structural panel and identifying the weakest panel or

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping It is all too well known that the chain is as strong as it’s weakest link, so it is in the ship structure

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Process - Hull A rating derived by identifying the weakest link would be therefore more precise, and a better indicator Although such an assessment is more difficult to accomplish and time consuming IR-CAP utlises this concept to derive local strength rating

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Local Strength Rating Process Ship A Compartment Compartments in Cargo region + APT & FPT The Compartment Boundaries Structural Panels Plating + Secondary Stiffeners + Primary Girders Rating process starts at Panel Level

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Local Strength Rating Process

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Local Strength Rating Process Besides TM readings the assessment also considers internal / external examination and test results That is condition of the structure including coating condition also influences the rating Thus the compartment rating is derived considering TM readings and observed condition of the compartment

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Local Strength Rating Process Dry-dock External Examination Internal Examination Local Strength Rating of Each Panel Overall survey Close-up survey Thickness Measurements

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping 4 Attributes that are reported from External and Internal Examinations General conditionBuckling, Indentations, Cracks These attributes are considered together with the Thickness Measurement to rate each panel Wastage Pitting, Localized thinningCoating conditionGood, Fair or PoorAnode conditionGood, Adequate, In-adequate

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Longitudinal Strength Rating Evaluation is carried out by using a specially developed software that computes available Longitudinal Strength, at various sections in the cargo region Available Strength is then compared with that required at the location.

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Longitudinal Strength Rating The software also helps evaluation of various repair options to improve the longitudinal strength, where required, in an optimum way. Longitudinal Strength Rating for the Vessel = the poorest rating obtained.

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Total Hull Rating - Computation Total Hull Rating Rating of each Individual Compt. Weighted Average Compt. Boundaries Rating of Panels in Boundary Surface Overall Rating (Longl Strength) Minimum over the entire Cargo Length Longitudinal Strength evaluation at various sections Overall Rating (Local Structures)

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating Machinery / Cargo Systems

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping CAP Rating – Machinery / Cargo Systems Overall Survey Functional Test Predictive Test Audit of Maintenance Practices Machinery Rating Maintenance Rating Total Machinery Rating

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Machinery job cards To carry out the Machinery CAP survey ‘Job Cards’ are prepared for each ship Ship’s Machinery is systematically arranged in logical functional system groups such as ‘Propulsion System’, etc. For each machinery in each system, attributes to be examined are identified and listed down in the job cards.

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Job Cards are prepared by grouping the machinery into well defined systems - Propulsion System etc. Machinery job cards Note the detailed list of components for each machinery unit, for which information is reported These job cards prepared by H.O. for each ship, and are filled up by the surveyor performing the survey

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Overall Survey / Function Test Each machine is examined as per the items identified on the Job- cards Function test of each machinery is witnessed and it’s current capability assessed

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Overall Survey / Function Test Overall Survey Examination of each machine component for any deterioration, corrosion, wear etc. Verify the condition of instrumentation, and Note presence of any leakages, etc.

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Overall Survey / Function Test Functional Testing To verify that the intended function of the machinery is being performed satisfactorily Verify the Operational Parameters / Measure the output and Verify the functioning of safety devices

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Predictive Testing All machinery is subjected to predictive testing, as applicable, to ensure no hidden defects exist Depending on the machinery one or more of the following tests employed: Vibration measurements Used oil analysis IR ( Insulation Resistance) Measurement

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Measured vibration levels are compared against acceptable levels and ratings assigned. Acceptable levels adopted are derived from ISO Std. 7919, and from our past experience. Vibration Measurements :

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Audit of Maintenance Practices The audit verifies that: Maintenance routines are as per manufacturer’s recommendations and good engineering practice Maintenance routines are carried out as per schedule and records maintained A good system of Inventory Control for spares and stores exists for maintenance activity

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping Total Machinery Rating - Computation Total Machinery Rating Rating of each Individual Syst. Weighted Average Mach. Attributes + Predictive Testing Rating of Machinery Items Overall Rating (Maintenance) Minimum over all the Systems Audit of maintenance practice for each machinery Overall Rating (Machinery Current Status)

IR CAPIR CAP Indian Register of Shipping In Summary… IR- CAP is a comprehensive scheme for assessment of Tankers The implementation of the scheme is also as disciplined Well Accepted by our clients as a Value Adding Service Another example of Quality Service from IRS
