Objective 28C: Explain the electing of a president through the electoral College Tyler Coley Jennifer Dryden 3rd Period

2 Review: What is the Electoral College?
The Electoral College is a process that began as part of the original design of the U.S. Constitution. The Electoral College was established by the founding fathers as a compromise between election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote. The people of the United States vote for the electors who then vote for the President, depending on the popular vote from their state.

3 The Election The election of the president is not based on the popular vote, as some may believe. It is based on the electoral college system. Each state has a certain number of electors (votes) based on their population at the time of the census, which takes place every 10 years. The votes are made up of the total number or representatives for the state. Meaning in the House of Representatives, and the Senate

4 Continued… So while one nominee may receive the most popular votes, he may lose the election because he did not receive the majority of the electoral votes.

5 The Procedure When we vote on election day for our pick for president. We are really voting to show our representatives, in the electoral college, who we want them to vote for. So technically the elector could vote for whoever he wishes despite who wins the popular vote for their state, although it is unlikely because it would be political suicide.

6 Procedure Continued… After the count of votes is done, the electors see who won in popular votes and typically puts in his vote(s) for the winner of the states election. Certain states or worth more than others. Such as; California has 55 electoral votes and Texas has 34 electoral votes. To win the nominee must receive at leas 270 of the 538 electoral votes.
