1 How organisms obtain their energy
Photosynthesis How organisms obtain their energy

3 Photosynthesis Photosynthesis:
The process through which plants make their own food through means of a chemical change. Through the process of photosynthesis, plants and some other organisms convert the sun’s radiant energy into chemical energy.

4

5 Where does photosynthesis occur?
Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves of a plant in organelles called chloroplast.

6 Plant Leaf Structure Basic Leaf Structure Stomata (Stoma)
Mesophyll Cell Chloroplasts Stoma Mesophyll Cell Chloroplast

7 Plant Leaf Structure B. Basic Leaf Structure
Stomata (Stoma) are pores in a plant leaf surface through which water and gases are exchanged between the plant and the atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Oxygen (O2)

8 Plant Leaf Structure Basic Leaf Structure
2. The mesophyll cell is a cell found on the surface of a leaf. Cell Wall Nucleus Chloroplast Central Vacuole

9 Plant Leaf Structure Basic Leaf Structure
3. Chloroplasts are tiny organelles within the plant cell where photosynthesis takes place.

10 The purpose of the chloroplast is to make sugars and starches

11 Photosynthetic Process
Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) Plants take in water (H2O) Plants absorb light (Light) Sugar (plant food) is created (C6H12O6) Oxygen is produced and released (O2) 6 CO H2O + Light  C6H12O O2

12 What do they do with the energy?
As a result of photosynthesis, plants meet their immediate need for energy—to grow, develop, respond, and reproduce. The food not used right away is stored by plants in their roots, stems, leaves, fruit, or flowers

13 What are the raw materials of photosynthesis?
The raw materials (reactants) of photosynthesis are carbon dioxide and water.

14 What are the products of photosynthesis?
The products of photosynthesis are sugar and oxygen.

15 What provides the energy for the chemical reactions of photosynthesis?
The sun provides the energy for photosynthesis.

16 Energy Transformation
Light Energy is also called radiant energy. Radiant energy is transformed through a chemical reaction inside the plants leaves. It is stored inside the plant as chemical energy in the glucose (“food”).

17 Autotrophs Organisms that are able to make their own food (in the form of sugars) Use the energy of the Sun are called autotrophs, meaning "self-feeders". This is another word for what producers do!

18 Heterotrophs Heterotrophs feed off of other forms of life.
The term heterotroph can refer to single or multi-celled organisms. This is another word for what consumers do!

19 The Formula (sunlight) Carbon Dioxide + Water  Sugar + Oxygen
6CO H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2

20 Assignment Photosynthesis Word Picture
You can only write the word “Photosynthesis” No other words Pictures and symbols only Create a PICTURE that shows the meaning or definition of photosynthesis Color it! Chapter 2, page 40
