For my front cover I decided to use the traditional Rock genre colours which are black and red. I chose these colours because it would portray the genre of magazine well because these colours are associated with rock and are frequently used in rock magazines such as Kerrang and Rocksound. I also decided to stick to the classic layout of Kerrang magazine by placing my masthead at the top of the page. This makes it easy for the audience to know what the magazine is called. On my front cover I chose to write the main article in a larger font and put it separate from the rest of the other features. This makes the article stand out and allow the audience to know its an important and main part of the magazine. There is one main person on the front cover and I have decided to use the same idea by using only one artist. Masthead Larger article Black and red colour scheme

In my front cover I stuck to the colour scheme of black and red but I also added the colours purple and white to develop the magazine. These colours allow me to develop my magazine but also work well and portray the genre still. At the bottom of the Kerrang magazine there is a section that says ‘PLUS’ and gives you artists that the magazine will include. I have decided to develop this idea by putting it at the bottom of the page and adding graphics to make the magazine more interesting.

There isn’t a lot that I wanted to challenge in my front cover because I wanted to stick to the conventions of rock so that my magazine related to my target audience. I only used one picture on the front cover as I didn’t want to deduct the attention from the main feature and main person where as on most magazine front covers they use one main image and several smaller images all over the page. I also challenged the conventions by keeping the headings and features structured down one side of the page. Normally the headings and features are spread all over the page. I chose to structure my headlines so that they were easy to read.

For my contents page I decided to use the same structure as the Kerrang magazine. I chose to keep it lined up to one side so that I was easy to read. Again I used the same colour scheme as the front cover of my magazine which is the colours normally used in rock magazines. The Kerrang magazine had ‘CONTENTS’ written in the corner of the page so I decided to use this idea for my magazine. In the Kerrang contents page the headlines were bold and a different colour to the rest of the text and I chose to do this in my magazine as well. Structure Bold headlines

In my contents page there are certain factors I wanted to develop to make my magazine more interesting. In Kerrang and my magazine the headlines were both bolder than the rest of the text, I decided to develop this idea by adding graphics behind the bold text to make things look more interesting. In both magazines it had ‘CONTENTS’ at the top of the page to clearly show it was the contents page. I decided to add the title of the magazine to this as well to add structure to the magazine.

For my contents page I decided to use the same idea as my front cover which was having only one picture as I think having several pictures can make it look a bit messy. I challenged the conventions in the contents page by using a acoustic guitar rather than an electric guitar as I wanted to strip things back a little. The main challenge on this page is the picture. Its not the normal or classic image of rock which is what I wanted to portray. A lot of bands play sometimes play their set acoustically and I wanted to show this in my magazine.

For my double page spread I decided to use one picture to cover the whole of a page as this was frequently used in Kerrang magazine. I also chose to use the same colour schemes as I the double page spread in Kerrang. These colours were red, white and black as these colours portray the genre well. Another idea I chose to use was a larger letter at the start of the interview as this makes the magazine look more professional. Picture covering full page Colour scheme

For my double page spread I chose to take inspiration from Kerrang and put one image across the whole page but to develop this idea I chose to write a quote from the interview and place it over the picture to make it more interesting. I also added a quote in the middle of the interview and put it larger than the rest of the text. This wasn’t used in the Kerrang magazine but its frequently used in other magazines and I wanted to incorporate this within my magazine double page spread.

For my double page spread I didn’t want to challenge the conventions of the magazine as conventions are there for a reason. I feel if I challenged the rock conventions too much then my magazine wouldn’t be portrayed well to its target audience.
