Aqueducts were built of bricks posed one upon the other, with the function of bringing water to the richer’s houses, to the fountains and to the public bath.

The aqueduct’s structure was built partly in opus reticulatum and part in opus latericium, in the inside there were stones of poor quality and no beauty, binded in a conglomerate of mortar (opus cementicium)

We saw the hole in the aqueduct where once the water flew and the guide told us that, the lowest is the declivity of the aqueduct, the most water will pass in the hole easily.

The Aqua Marcia aqueduct was costucted by the praetor Quintus Marcius in 144 B.C. It gathered waters from the high-basin of the Aniene river. Its lenght was 91kms and the drift was partly underground and partly on great archways.

The Claudian aqueduct was begun by Caligula in 38 A.C. and accomplished by Claudius in 52 A.C. ; it gathered the high quality ancient waters from the Aniene river valley and it was, and it is still, 27 ms. high

The Felice Aqueduct was begun by Pope Gregory XIII in 1583 and accomplished by Pope Sixtus V (Felice Peretti) in 1585. The terminal display fountain (mostra) of this aqueduct is called the “Ugly Moses fountain”

The Marrana (water Mariana) is an artificial pit wich was realized by Pope Callistus II in 1122.

The visit has been very interesting because it gave us the opportunity to learn something about Roman’s engenering art and the pleasure of passing the day outdoor together.
