It was the fifteenth mission

3. Daily Life
The women gathered acorns, berries and dry seeds . the men hunted deer, antelope,
Rabbits, quail, squirrel, fish and bear for food and clothing

4. History By 1823 the chain of 21 missions reached from
San Diego to Sonoma. They were spaced about 30
To 40 miles apart. About a day’s walk , along El
Camino real [ The Royal Road. The missions made
Good stopping places for tired travelers, so each
Had rooms available for guests.

5. Changes over time
1800, 6 earthquakes a day for 19 days damaged all the adobe buildings
1803 church was completed
1838 new cemetery was opened because old one was full
1906 earthquake damaged side wall of church
1923 Bell tower was remodeled
1949 Bell tower was removed
1976 Bell tower built

6. Interesting Mission Facts
There were originally 9 bells, but only 3 remain there today
The first parish pastor is Father Joseph Manuel de Martiarena
Alfred Hitchcock filmed part of “Vertigo” in and around this mission.
