2 Timeline 1807 – Napoleon (France) invades Portugal and Spain
1815 – Napoleon defeated 1821 – Russians claim that Alaska’s southern border is the 51st parallel and forbade other countries from going north of this line 1823 – Monroe gives speech that creates Monroe Doctrine

Decide what course of action you want your country to take. Will you go to war? Will you build an alliance? With who? What conditions will your alliance be build upon? Use reasons from the handout to support your decisions! Each group member should have one (or more) of these responsibilities: Planner – Once you have discussed all answers within the team, write down your country’s response and decisions Diplomat – Writes and delivers the telegram(s) that are to be sent to other countries Speaker – Present your country’s case before the World Court Defendant – Works with speaker to defend your countries position in the World Court

5 Monroe Doctrine: Americans were worried about the actions of European nations – especially Spain regaining its lost colonies in South America 1823 – President Monroe issues a foreign policy statement to Congress (written by his Sec. of State John Quincy Adams) known as the “Monroe Doctrine” warning: Europe shall not regain control of newly independent Latin American nations US would oppose ANY attempt to build new colonies in the Americas England supports the US because it does not want other European nations to control Latin America ** Monroe Doctrine would shape American foreign policy for the next 100 years!
