Getting to know all about… STRANGERS and ACQUAINTANCES … and learning how to stay safe around them.

A stranger is a person you do not know.

Can you find the stranger here?

They are all strangers because we don’t know them.

But some people are like Mrs. Magillicutty.

Mrs. Magillicutty is an acquaintance. An acquaintance is a person you know but not well. It’s a person who is not yet a friend.

Now that you’ve learned about strangers and acquaintance s…

We need your help to decide whether these people are friends or strangers and acquaintances.

Put your thumbs up if it’s a friend.

Put your thumbs down if it’s a stranger or acquaintance.

Put your thumbs in the middle if you are unsure.

Oh, look how sweet that grandpa is! Yeah, but he is not your grandpa is he? What do you think?

That’s right! Even though he looks sweet, you don’t know anything about him.

Mrs. Smith is always working in her yard. Do you know anything about her? What do you think?

You’re sharp! Even though you know your neighbor’s name and that she likes to work in the yard, you don’t know anything else about her.

I just met him. His name is Dan. He is my new friend’s cousin. Hold on! So you’ve only met him once? What do you think?

You’ve got it! Just because you met him once through a friend, doesn’t mean you can trust him.

Oh, look at her dog! It’s so cute. Wait a minute! Do you know her? What do you think?

Now you’re talking! Don’t let a dog fool you. Just because someone has a dog does not mean that you know her or that she is going to be nice.

Wow! He said that I could have one for free. Who is he? What do you think?

Now that’s out of the ballpark! You’ve done an excellent job! Even though someone seems nice doesn’t mean you know him.

Now that you hit a home run when deciding if someone is a friend or stranger and acquaintance…

…it’s time to learn the 1 st rule for staying safe.

RULE #1: Be aware of your surroundings.

RULE #2: Check first! An adult you trust needs to know where you’re going. What do you do if you want to go somewhere else when you’re out with your family or friends?
