2 An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb by making its meaning more specific. Adverbs modify by answering the questions When? Where? How? and To what degree?

3 Adverbs Adverbs modify verbs: Finally, the storm is ending. The storm finally is ending. The storm is finally ending. The storm is ending finally.

4 Adverbs Adverbs modify adjectives: The snow was quite heavy. Driving was very hazardous.

5 Adverbs Adverbs modify other adverbs: It almost never snows this heavily. I hardly ever need to wear my boots.

6 Adverbs The word not and the contraction n’t are considered adverbs. Other negative words can function as adverbs of time and place. The plane has not landed. The plane is nowhere in sight. They have hardly boarded. I have never flown.
