Inventors & Inventions Done by group 3: Terence Jia Yi Keran

Alexander Graham Bell His invention of the telephone grew out of his research of ways to improve the telegraph. After obtaining the patent for the telephone Bell continued his many experiments in communication, and now holds over 20 patents.

James West James West is one of the most famous African American inventors alive today but once upon a time, he was a kid, just like you. He invented the most commonly used microphone on earth! In 1962, Mr. West invented a new kind of microphone.

Sarah Boone Sarah Boone was a famous African American inventor who took an already great idea and made it better! She patented a device to help neatly iron clothing. This was the predecessor to the modern ironing board. It was made of a narrow wooden board, with collapsible legs and a padded cover. Before Sarah's inventions, people simply used a table or were creative by lying a plank of wood across two chairs or small tables.

Process of the light bulb invention In the early 1800’s, inventors began experimenting with electric light. In 1808, Sir Humphrey Davy, an English chemist, discovered that an electrical arc passed between two poles produced light. By the mid-1800’s, inventors began experimenting with the incandescent light bulb, which passes electricity through a filament that is enclosed in a container, or bulb. A filament is a thinly spun thread, fiber, or wire. One problem inventors faced when the incandescent light bulb was being developed was finding the right material for a filament that would produce enough light and not burn out quickly. Another problem was inserting the filament in a bulb without oxygen, because oxygen would cause the filament to burn out. In 1878, Thomas Edison began research to invent an incandescent light bulb that would operate with electricity and could be used in homes and businesses. It took months of research to find a filament material that would produce the best light. Eventually, in October 1879, Edison successfully produced a practical light bulb using a carbon filament made from burned sewing thread. Edison had improved his light bulb so that it lasted for 1,500 hours. He began selling his light bulb to the public.
