1 What you don’t know about Pornography can hurt you
The New Drug Information For Teens

2 What is Pornography? All sexually oriented material intended primarily to arouse the reader, viewer, or listener. Explicit videos and pictures Would your look at the image or video with your mom?

3 Sad Truth about Today’s Porn
Easy to find Easy to hide from others Extreme porn is easier to find than just naked bodies Some images and videos depict things that are not appropriate – even for adults

4 Largest Porn Consumers
Porn is Everywhere Sex #1 Search Topic 11 to 17 year olds Largest Porn Consumers 1st Exposure To Porn - Avg. 11 years old Teens see 50 porn clips per week Girls Christians Boys 93% 45% 67% Admitted to a Major Porn Problem in Home 13 year olds exposed

5 Money Motivated Generates more $$ than all the combined professional football, baseball and basketball teams combined. $57.0B Worldwide Revenues $12.0B Starting late last year, Internet service providers in Britain made “family-friendly filters,” which block X-rated websites, the default for customers. Now any account holder who wants to view adult material needs to actively opt in — effectively raising a hand to say, “Bring on the naughty.” The initiative, which was conceived and very publicly promoted by the government, is intended to prevent what Prime Minister David Cameron called the corrosion of childhood, which, he argued in a speech last year, happens when kids are exposed to pornography at a young age. In the same speech, he seemed to toss teenagers into the group in need of protection, referring to “young people who think it’s normal to send pornographic material as a prelude to dating.” U.S. Porn Revenues $3.0B Child Porn Revenues All that money lures desperate people into a life of abuse, drugs and porn.

6 Porn kills love and relationships
Porn Harms in 3 Ways Porn changes the Brain Porn kills love and relationships Porn can lead to violence

7 Porn is Like a Drug Viewing pornography tricks your brain into releasing dopamine which is the same pleasure chemicals that drugs do. Your brain actually begins to rewire itself because of this artificial stimulation.

8 Porn Changes the Brain Just like heroin.
Dopamine distorts the natural development of your personality. Repetitive doses rewire the brain’s reward pathway ultimately changing the make up of the viewer’s brain. Resulting in an increased appetite for porn. Just like heroin.

9 Porn is Addictive Porn’s rewiring of the brain into ‘reward pathways’ makes it harder to find joy & happiness. Happiness then is only found with more exposure to porn.

10 Porn Affects Your Behavior
It distorts your reality of acceptable behavior. What looks normal on videos - isn’t normal. It can decrease your ability to focus. It can give you a distorted self- image. It pulls you away from achieving your goals.

11 Porn Addiction Escalates
In order to just feel some sense of normality, an individual usually needs an ever increasing dosage of porn. The material that they seek out becomes more bizarre to achieve the same level of arousal.

12 Porn Kills Love Real love requires a real person.
Porn draws you away from those you love. It can cause you treat those you love with less respect. It ruins relationships.

13 Porn is a Lie Real people don’t act like that.
It’s a distorted view of the world that unGodly people created to suck you into their sinful world. It’s fake, those people are paid to try to get you hooked on porn.

14 Porn Leaves You Lonely Frequent porn viewers become lonely and depressed. It can hurt your self confidence and make you nervous and awkward in social situations. It can make you feel guilty and dirty.

15 Porn’s Dirty Little Secret
To viewers, Porn can appear a fantasy world of pleasure and thrills. To those in it, they are pulled in by drugs, slavery, trafficking, rape and abuse.

16 Porn Warps Ideas About Sex
Teens are getting the wrong impression of what is acceptable. Porn often leads to having sex sooner and more riskier sex, putting them at greater risk. In many cases, porn takes what is wrong and tries to make it look right and acceptable.

17 Porn Leads to Violence Porn is packed full of women being physically and verbally abused. It’s teaching that humiliation and violence are a normal part of what sex is supposed to be. 87% of child molesters were regularly involved with hardcore pornography.

18 Serial Killers and Pornography
These Serial Killers admit pornography played a significant part of their lives. Gary Bishop – Killed 5 boys Jeffrey Dahmer – Killed 17 men & boys Ted Bundy - Confessed to 30 homicides “In prison, I’ve met a lot of violent men like me, and without exception, every one of them was deeply influenced by and addicted to pornography." Ted Bundy as interviewed by Dr. James Dobson the day before he was executed in Florida.

19 Summary Porn changes your personality. It makes you hide from others.
It destroys relationships. The scars can last a lifetime. Porn degrades and misrepresents women. Porn promotes crime in the real world.

20 Digital Safety for Teens

21 Evolution of Online Safety
Time Protecting from Whom From What? Bad Adults Pornography & predators Today Peers Cyberbullying, Inappropriate content Sexting DIGITAL SAFETY

22 What is ‘Sexting’? Nude or sexually explicit photo-sharing or text messages Usually via cellphones, but possible via other devices and Web Illegal when involving minors Teens can be charged with production, possession, and/or distribution of child porn ONLY SHOWS HOW FLUID SOCIAL NETWORKING IS.... If they aren’t now, very soon, kids will be able to do everything on phones that they do on the Web – plus texting! There are phone-only social-network sites (accessible via the Web but designed for phone screens), and MySpace and Facebook – all the majors – allow users to update their profiles from their phones. DIGITAL SAFETY

23 Why do kids send ‘sext’ messages?
Peer pressure (Trying to please a boyfriend) Trying to get others to like you Impulsive risk-taking (mooning) Flirting Bullying or intimidation (Send me a pic or else) Revenge (to make someone jealous) DIGITAL SAFETY 23

24 How Common is Sexting? “Sexting” Shockingly Common Among Teens.
1/2 of teenagers admit to sending sexually suggestive images. THESE ARE ALL IMPORTANT BUT VERY GENERAL – CERTAINLY EACH INCIDENT IS UNIQUE AND NEEDS CARING INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT - a full, nonconfrontational, child-caregiver discussion that looks at the situation’s circumstances. The psychological damage can be considerable – some kids have suicidal thoughts. School counselor I spoke with several years ago would find out all the parties involved, get them in a room, and do bully-victim reverse role-playing (empathy training). In families and schools, some of these incidents can be turned into TEACHABLE MOMENTS (maybe anonymized?) for all parties’ benefit. High School Principals say it’s so common, they can no longer police it. DIGITAL SAFETY 24

25 Making Good On-Line Choices
Treat every post as if it could end up on the front page of a newspaper. Posts & texts don’t go away. They can surface years later. This is what you did last night Ask: What if her/his mom saw this post? Assume they probably will….. DIGITAL SAFETY

26 Consequences - Non-legal
Can be disciplined at school Could lead to abuse or harassment Potentially searchable on the Web, forever Can destroy your reputation Can prevent you from a certain college or job Think before you post DIGITAL SAFETY 26

27 Consequences - Legal Potential for child-porn production, distribution, or possession charges. Could be required by state law to register as a sex offender. Sex offenders are shunned from society – no college, no job, and even restrictions to where you can live. See “US sex-offender laws, registries not conducive to child safety” < “More on sex-offender registry flaws” < and more coverage in NetFamilyNews.org < See also ConnectSafely.org’s “Tips to Prevent Sexting”: DIGITAL SAFETY 27

28 GASP Avoidance God is always watching Avert your eyes Stay pure Porn destroys

29 GASP Avoidance God is always watching
Even if you are behind closed doors, God is always present and knows your good and bad habits. He is a forgiving God for those who repent. Porn separates you from God Porn does not treat others as we would want to be treated. It can lead to bizarre and ungodly acts.

30 GASP Avoidance What the Bible says…
1 John 2:16 “the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes … is not from the Father but is from the world. Romans 13:13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality …. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Matthew 5:28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Thess 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;  that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor.

31 GASP Avoidance Avert your eyes
You will be exposed to inappropriate images but it is within your power to avert your eyes. Do not engage or “click” to see more. Break the temptation by turning away.

32 GASP Avoidance Stay Pure
Porn and explicit images change our perspective of what Godly relationships are like. This culture will surround you with impure temptations. You must purposely decide now to stay pure. Your relationship with your future spouse will be blessed because of it.

33 Porn Destroys Relationships with Others
GASP Avoidance Porn Destroys Relationships with Others Someone’s Mother, Sister, Daughter Who is it disrespecting in your own family Every view promotes the expansion of Porn and all the bad things that come along with it.
