Victims of DMST often do not self-identify as victims Possible Reasons: – Fear of physical or psychological abuse – Trauma bonds with the trafficker/pimp – Violent threats toward family and/or friends – Not seeing themselves as victims – Fear of legal consequences – Distrust of law enforcement – Treated as a criminal, not a victim The National Report on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking: America’s Prostituted Children, May 2009

Stand Against Trafficking Coalition History – Two groups existed in Springfield for years: A subcommittee of the Violence Free Families Coalition A grassroots group of ladies who started with a garage sale to raise money to host a conference – The merger of the two groups created magic! Registered as a coalition this summer and maintain 30 people per meeting

Mission Statement: Stand Against Trafficking exists to mobilize the community to end human trafficking in the Ozarks. Goals: To raise awareness in the general community about domestic human trafficking in southwest Missouri To provide education to key community leaders (i.e. law enforcement, attorneys, medical and mental health providers, educators, government officials, faith-based organizations, community groups, etc.) on what defines human trafficking, the local prevalence of the issue, and how to identify and assist victims and survivors of human trafficking To emphasize prevention of human trafficking by a) identifying risk factors, including substance abuse and interpersonal violence; b) identifying vulnerable individuals, including youth; and c) educating those individuals and groups on strengthening protective factors and reducing risk factors To promote community collaboration around the topic of human trafficking, including sharing information, providing training, and identifying and assisting victims of human trafficking To advocate for and support survivors of human trafficking on their journey toward wholeness and to connect victims of human trafficking to agencies who have the resources to meet their needs

Stand Against Trafficking Coalition Past Projects – A local conference with national speakers – Attended and presented at multiple conferences including Stop the Violence and Hidden Impact – Multiple community awareness and educational events with an average of 80 in attendance – Provided financial assistance to victims

Stand Against Trafficking Coalition Current Projects – Quarterly community events targeting specific sectors (i.e. law enforcement, school personnel, mental health services providers, etc) – Media campaign to educate the public, utilizing TV and radio PSAs – Coalition professional development projects including website revamping and creation of coalition products to distribute

The Platform Many in the Springfield/Greene County area do not associate trafficking as a local problem Educating them on its prevalence is important We work closely local shelters and even assist a nearby trafficking safe house with needs The community collaboration around this issue has been the driving force for making a difference and changing attitudes!
