1 Tech Theatre Safety Notes “Safety First”

2 Painting Maintain a clean/organized enviroment Keep sink clear of any paint, rags, and brushes CLEAN BRUSHES IMMEDIATELY after done with use. Use cool water for brushes and warm water for sponges and rollers. Hang to dry Some paints are flammable. Keep all paints stored in the cabinet and lock the cabinet when finished for the day. NEVER use a screw driver to open a paint lip - use a church key

3 Painting NEVER use a hammer to close a paint lid - use a rubber mallet Use the right brush for the job necessary Mix/prepare paint the the shop 1st then transport to where you are painting\ Go outside for all spray paint jobs or when working with materials that emit fumes Use common sense and be aware of your surroundings Always return equipment to the proper place

4 Painting DO NOT dip brush to top of paint -- only the edge Know the location of the closest fire extinguisher and first aid kit Wear ‘PAINT CLOTHES’ Use a ladder when painting up high -- NOT a chair

5 Shop Always keep equipment in good working order and report any damage to JFO Maintain a clean/organized work enviroment Never eat/drink near any power tools DO NOT operate any equipment you have not been taught how to use or without adult supervision ALWAYS wear safety glasses OVER YOUR EYES when working with ANY power tool Pull back long hair and any hanging items of clothing

6 Shop Wear closed toe, hard-soled shoes AT ALL TIMES Always unplug a power tool before changing a bit or blade Know the location of the closest first aid kit and fire extinguisher Use COMMON SENSE and be aware of your surroundings Always return equipment to the tool room and to it’s proper area in the tool room

7 Tech Booth/Catwalk Check-in and out with JFO before working in the space Unplug it before you work with it - never work “HOT unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY NO FOOD OR DRINK IN BOOTH Only AUTHORIZED students in the booth and the catwalk DO NOT work on the catwalk unless faculty is present Avoid working on the catwalk when there is anyone below

8 Tech Booth/Catwalk Wear hardhats and gloves Maintain your center of balance Know the location of the closest fire extinguisher Report any damp/wet conditions Use common sense and be aware of your surroundings

9 Lights Always keep equipment in good and clean working conditions Maintain a clean/organized enviroment NEVER eat/drink near lighting equipment Cover the board with the dust cover when finished with lights and turn off board Unplug instruments before servicing Keep fingers off lamps (bulbs)

10 Lights Wear gloves when hanging/focusing ALWAYS secure a safety cable to the baton and yoke Secure all tools to your person when on the catwalk Wear closed-toe, hard rubber -soled shoes NEVER wire/unwire a plug (unless trained on how to do so)

11 Lights NEVER work on lighting alone -- have a buddy Leave the catwalk free of tools, supplies, lights, etc During a show work quietly and don’t distract When on heads (cans) keep all conversation to an absolute minimum ALWAYS lock the trap door, window, and door to booth after use

12 Sound Always keep equipment in good, clean working condition Maintain an organized environment NEVER eat/drink near lighting equipment Unplug instruments before servicing Coil and hang all mic cables using velcro

13 Sound Always disconnect a plug by pulling on the body of the connector, NOT the cable Store all microphones in their bags/boxes in the cabinet Inspect mic and speaker cables before/after use NEVER blow into a microphone or tap to test. Simply talk

14 Sound Report any damp/wet conditions Use common sense. Be aware of your surroundings Know where the closest fire extinguisher and first aid kit are
