3 General Information Always get your TEACHER’S permission before beginning a Lab. Read the Lab before starting Look up unknown safety symbols Pay attention to safety information If an accident does occur, inform teacher immediately

4 Know Locations of Nearest Fire Alarm – outside my door on the wall by the door going outside Go over Fire evacuation routes Go over Tornado Drills Go over Shelter In Place

5 What does a fire blanket look like? What does an eyewash fountain look like?

6 NEVER work alone Keep area free from ALL unnecessary clutter Dress appropriately Tie hair back if long Remove dangling jewelry Do not wear long loose sleeves

7 EYE SAFETY Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, mechanical equipment, or any type of flame. If any substance gets in your eyes or on your skin notify your teacher immediately.

8 HAND SAFETY Wear protective gloves to avoid chemical or heat injuries to your hands.

9 CLOTHING PROTECTION Wear an apron to protect your clothing from staining, burning, or corrosion.

10 SHARP/POINTED OBJECTS Use sharp instruments with extreme care. Never cut an object while holding it in your hand. Instead, place the object on a suitable cutting surface. Notify the teacher immediately if you get a cut.

11 HEAT Use safety goggles when working near an open flame. Wear oven mitts to avoid burns. NEVER reach over an open flame.

12 ELECTRICITY Do not let electrical cords hang over your work space. Make sure your hands are dry and the electrical equipment is turned off before plugging it into the outlet. Turn off and unplug all equipment when finished with the activity.

13 CHEMICALS Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals. If you spill a chemical on your clothes or skin notify your teacher immediately. Never taste, touch, or smell a chemical unless your teacher instructs you to do so.

14 ANIMAL SAFETY Handle animals only as directed by your teacher. Always treat animals carefully and with respect. Wash your hands after handling any animal.

15 PLANT SAFETY Wash hands thoroughly after handling any part of a plant. Do not eat any part of a plant.

16 GLASSWARE Examine all glassware before using it. Make sure that it is clean and free of any chips or cracks. Report any damaged glassware to your teacher.

17 CLEANUP Before leaving the lab, clean your work area. Wash any necessary items and put away all equipment and supplies. Dispose of all materials as directed by your teacher. Make sure all electrical equipment is turned off and unplugged. ALWAYS wash your hands after a lab. NEVER take anything from the lab station without permission from your teacher.
