Comparativos y Superlativos

What is a comparative? the comparative is a construction that serves to express a comparison between two (or more) entities or groups in quality, quantity, or degree.

Phrases I need to know are… When constructing the comparative in Spanish, use an adjective plus comparative phrase.

Phrases I need to know are… When constructing the superlative in Spanish, use an adjective plus superlative phrase. Remember that the superlative is the highest classification of that group.

Comparatives ComparativeTranslation Mejor quebetter Peor queWorse than Mayor queOlder than Menor queYounger than Mas + adj + queMore than Menos + adj + queLess than Tan + adj + comoAs…as

¡Es fácil comparar en español! La casa es grande. El granero es más grande que la casa. El castillo es el más grande de todos.

What does this all mean??? La casa es grande.  The house is big. El granero es más grande que la casa.  The farm is bigger than the house. El castillo es el más grande de todos.  The castle is the biggest of all.

More info La casa es grande.  The house is big. The fist sentence uses an adjective to describe the house.

More info… El granero es más grande que la casa.  The farm is bigger than the house. The second sentence compares the house to the farm.

More info The third sentence gives the classification of the castle in comparison to all buildings. El castillo es el más grande de todos.  The castle is the biggest of all.

Superlatives SuperlativeTranslation El/la mejorThe best El/la peorThe worst El/la mayorThe oldest El/la menorThe youngest El/la Mas + adj + deThe most El/la Menos + adj + deThe least

The comparative is for when you’re talking about two people or things: Addison is more beautiful than Meredith. Addison es más bonita que Meredith. The superlative is for when you’re talking about three or more people or things: Addison is the most beautiful of all. Addison es la más bonita de todas.

As you can see, if you use “most” rather than “-est” (which, like “-er,” doesn’t exist in Spanish), the word order is identical to English: Addison is the most beautiful of all. Addison es la más bonita de todas. However, you need to note that if you put a noun in the superlative expression, it will come BEFORE “más + adjective.” Addison is the most beautiful woman of all. Addison es la mujer más bonita de todas. But that should be no surprise, since, as you learned in chapter 2, adjectives normally come after the noun they describe: noun adjective Addison es una mujer bonita.

You try Write 3 sentences comparing your teachers or classes. Write 3 sentences using the superlative to discuss your teachers or classes.
