2 Key Elements of the Problem  Frequency of Vandalism  Years of problems  Multiple perpetrators  Cause lack of respect and pride  Student’s perceived lack of progress in solving the problem  Multiple parties awaiting the principal’s decisions

3 Central Questions to Consider  What are the consequences for this student?  How will you address the media?  Should the school press charges?  Should the student body and faculty be addressed?

4 Strategic Decisions… made by Jamie  Hold the child accountable for their actions  Consistency  Provide guidance toward finding a positive outlet for the child

5 Strategic Decisions… made by Dan  Teachable moment, but still realize that this was wrong  Try to talk to the student in the terms of a community

6 Strategic Decisions… made by Deon  Teachable moment  Empower the student to find a better outlet  Clean up the vandalism  Don’t leave it up for long  Get it down as quick as time

7 Strategic Decisions… made by Dan  Child is still accountable, but empower him  Gives the child “ownership” of the building
