4 Band  Instrumental music in West Deptford begins in 5th grade.  Beginning students start by choosing to study: Flute (Tweeters) Clarinet (Screechersquawkers) Saxophone (Honkers) Trumpet/Trombone (Tooters) Percussion (Thumpers).  Every band student has a lunch/recess group lesson and at least one band rehearsal every week.

5 Band  6th grade band is a homeroom and plays every day.  7th grade band has a couple of rehearsals as well as their general music class together.  8th grade is an elective that meets every day. The emphasis is on jazz / blues styles and improvisation.  We study and play music from the middle ages to early jazz and blues.

6 Band  The goal is for every student to be able to : Read Count Play in any key and in many styles  Toward that goal, band students complete 11 texts over four years.  There is a major emphasis on: Music Theory Ear Training Musical Literacy Connections to ALL curricular areas.  Many times more than 50 students will focus and listen intently to an entire piece of music for the chance to answer a question and earn one Dove chocolate, that's a teaching bargain.
