1 Warm-up Think about a time when you had to learn a painful truth. How old were you? What was the “truth” you learned, and how did you find out that truth? What had you believed was the truth before?

2 Objective: To read and annotate a text for literary elements (theme, setting, conflict, resolution, and foreshadowing) and to identify the underlying purposes of a narrative “The Stolen Party” pg. 110

3 “The Stolen Party” Chunk 1 – Read chunk 1 of “The Stolen Party” – Annotate chunk 1 for elements of conflict between the main character and her mother

4 “The Stolen Party” Read chunk 2 Annotate chunk 2 for the feelings that Rosaura is feeling – About the party, about her mother, or about herself? How does Señora Ines and her daughter treat Rosaura?

5 “The Stolen Party” Read Chunk 3 – Annotate chunk three for elements of conflict Conflict between the two girls, and any internal conflict Rosaura may be feeling

6 “The Stolen Party” Under your warm up: – Make a prediction for what may happen at the party later in the story. – Turn and share your prediction with your neighbor. Take two minutes to write about how their prediction is similar to or different from your own.

7 “The Stolen Party” Read chunk 4 – Annotate the text of chunk 4 for Rosaura’s reactions Her reactions to other children at the party, and reactions about being the assistant to the magician

8 “The Stolen Party” Read Chunk 5 – Annotate the text for Rosaura’s feelings again Are they different from before? What is she looking forward to? What might the gift bags represent to a child at a party?

9 “The Stolen Party” Read chunk 6 – Annotate for Rosaura’s actions toward Señora Ines What was the surprise ending? What did Rosaura learn? – Write: Was your prediction correct? How was your prediction similar to or different from the ending?

10 Stolen? What was Stolen? Talk with a partner about how the party had been stolen from Rosaura. How had her mother tried to warn or prevent her from going? Write two examples from the beginning of the story that foreshadow the ending

11 Final – Using your notes from the reading, your predictions, and your discussion, complete the Plot Diagram work sheet. – Due end of period or tomorrow as homework.
