3 What are User Groups & Permissions? Permissions: Specific access rights a user has to various parts of a SharePoint site. Defines what site features and functionality is available to each user. These can be adjusted through the site interface.

4 What are User Groups & Permissions? Permissions Group: A named collection of users with identical permissions. A group can have its own permissions, so any users added to that group are automatically granted the same permissions. Groups can be created, deleted, and updated through the site interface.

5 What are User Groups & Permissions? Inheritance: The ability for objects in a site, such as a list or library, to use the permissions assigned to users and groups through the central permissions interface.

8 “Inside Group” View New: Add new users to group. Actions: Email group members and remove selected members from the group. Settings: Manage group name and permissions. Add/Remove group from Quick Launch. Set as a default group for site. Change visual settings for this view.

9 Permissions Layout & Navigation “Groups” View New: Add new users or groups to site. Settings: Add/Remove group from Quick Launch. Set as a default group for site.

10 Permissions Layout & Navigation “Site Permissions” View New: Add new users or groups to site. Actions: Edit or remove selected permission types. Settings: Add/Remove Site Collection Administrators. Enable/Disable the option for users to request access/permissions. Manage site Permission Levels.

12 Features of SharePoint Permissions Highly customizable system to allow direct control over which content and features of your SharePoint site are available to your end users. Role-based assignments allow for natural organization of users based on the business needs of your organization. Permission Groups allow for easy adjustments of access rights to large numbers of users without individually updating each user. Permissions between groups automatically integrate to provide users in multiple groups the highest combined level of permissions assigned to them.

17 Homework How will you use your SharePoint site? Which features are important to your organization? Who will need access to these features and who will manage them? Determine the types of users that will access your site and their roles in your organization. Discuss the layout of your site to determine if there are sections that should not be available to all users. Determine who will be site collection administrators and site administrators.
