2 Definitions Health can be defined, positively, negatively or holistically. This presentation examines the advantages and disadvantages of each definition

3 The Positive Definition This defines health as being fit and well, having a normal BMI, blood pressure etc. and being physically fit and active Health is maintained by exercise, sensible eating and moderation Healthy under positive definition

4 Negative Definition Health is defined as not being ill/the absence of sickness, unfitness or disease Health professionals tend to use this definitions as it focuses on visible problems. It is sometimes referred to as the biomedical model. Ill health occurs when something goes wrong in the body – medical professionals then intervene with treatments and cures Healthy under the negative definition?

5 Problems with the Medical model Biomedical model1.It is inward looking focussing on problems within the patient 2.Sometimes medical problems may be caused by social or emotional factors – medical intervention may not be the best treatment

6 Holistic Definition This emphasises the whole person (‘holistic’ means wholeness). A person is healthy when all aspects in their life is in a state of well being – physical, emotional, social, spiritual, mental. Holistic health is maintained by exercise, sensible eating, successful relationships, fulfilment in life and work, lack of stress, being at peace with yourself The holistic definition is useful because it looks outward from the person as well as inward. It also emphasises the interelated nature of factors contributing to health

7 Holistic Health Holistic ApproachPhysical Developing healthy activities that benefit your body such as nutritious eating and exercise. It is taking care of your body. Intellectual Using your resources to expand your knowledge, to create, to become mentally stimulated. Emotional Focuses on taking care of yourself and developing ways to enhance your inner resources. It is paying attention to elements such as self-expression, stress reduction and relaxation. Spiritual Enhances the connection between your mind and body. It is personal growth. Social Developing healthy relationships with those around you. It is contributing to your community. Occupational Contributing in a work environment that accommodates each other's weaknesses and strengths in a healthy way.
