7 Spread of New Ideas: ________________________________________________________ Paper: o Papermaking spread from China to the Middle East to Europe (CULTURAL DIFFUSION!) o Cheaper and easier to produce, paper quickly replaced the animal skins on which Europeans had written before

8 Spread of New Ideas: ________________________________________________________ Movable Type: o In the mid-1400s, a German named Johan Gutenberg developed a printing press that used movable type o Movable type is a system of reusable metal letters that can be fit into a frame to spell whatever you want! Here’s how it worked: A worker fitted letters into a frame, spread ink on the letters, and then pressed a sheet of paper against the letters. An entire page was printed at once. The worker could then rearrange the letters in the frame to create a new page!
