15. Growth of Slavery: ________________________________________________________ How did slavery grow? African slaves were preferred because: o There was a great need for farm labor o It was difficult to Africans to “run away” compared to Native Americans o Captured slaves were “selected” to be stronger, healthier, and often already trained in agriculture. By 1860, there are 4 million slaves in the Southern U.S…. This makes up 1/3 of the population of those states!
