4 VETERANS’ BENEFITS Military Burial Flag Most veterans are eligible for a burial flag Regardless of whether you are buried or cremated, a burial flag may still be presented to your family at the closing of a funeral service or memorial service

6 VETERANS’ BENEFITS Burial in National Cemeteries Eligibility Based on Length of Time in Active Military Service and Nature of Separation. Limitations Began in 1980. Available to an Eligible Veteran’s Widow or Widower who has not remarried, and Dependent Minor Children.

7 VETERANS’ BENEFITS Burial in Arlington National Cemeteries Arlington National Cemetery is under the Jurisdiction of the Department of Army, not the Department of Veterans Affairs. With the exception of cremated remains, burial is limited to specific categories of military personnel and veterans. 9 BURIAL BENEFITS & PLOT ALLOWANCES A Veteran who dies as a result of a service- connected disability is entitled to a maximum of $1,500 for burial and funeral expenses. Veterans who die as a result of disability after October 1, 1981, are entitled to up to $300. ELIGIBLE IF: Entitled at the time of death to pension or compensation. Died while hospitalized or domiciled in a VA facility or other facility at VA expense. An indigent veteran whose remains are unclaimed.

10 ADDITIONAL BURIAL BENEFITS For deaths on or after 11/1/90, an additional plot or interment allowance up to $150 is available to the same categories of veterans eligible for the $300 burial benefit or to those discharged or rehired from service because of a disability that was incurred. Applies only to those NOT buried in a National Cemetery. Also applies to those veterans of any war who died prior to November 1, 1990.

11 CLAIMS FOR BURIAL BENEFITS Must be filed within 2 years of permanent burial or cremation Additional transportation cost may be allowed if the veteran died at a VA hospital.

12 HEADSTONE OR GRAVE MARKER Veterans eligible for burial in a National Cemetery, buried on or after 10/18/78, are entitled to a government-provided headstone or grave marker, regardless of where they are buried. VA Form 40-1330 Completed and Processed by your Funeral Director Niche markers are also available to mark columbaria used for inurnment of cremated remains Style choices must be consistent with existing monuments at the place of burial

15 PRESIDENTIAL MEMORIAL CERTIFICATE A Parchment Certificate with a calligraphic inscription, expressing the nation’s grateful recognition of the Veteran’s service. Includes the Veteran’s Name Bears the Signature of the President
