1 Embedding Employability in Curriculum: The role of Work- related Learning in the Curriculum: Placements & Projects Kate Buchanan Director of Professional Studies, RNCM Alistair Campbell, recent graduate RNCM Laura Wilson, current student RNCM

2 One of many definitions of employability is: ‘A set of skills, knowledge and personal attributes that make an individual more likely to secure and be successful in their chosen occupation(s) to the benefit of themselves, the workforce, the community and the economy.’

3 Work-related Learning: Placements & Projects Academic Framework Unit Aims: To enable and support students’ engagement with a workplace environment To challenge students to apply and develop skills in communication and collaborative/team work To challenge students to apply and develop skills in creative leadership To provide students with support in producing targeted self-promotional materials, relevant to work-related learning experience, using online resources such as the VLE To develop students’ awareness of professional responsibility

4 Unit Outcomes On successful completion of the module, you should be able to: Reflect critically on a nominated professional context, its particular challenges, rewards and your own experience of these Contribute effectively to collaborative creative problem solving Prepare targeted promotional materials based on experience of a nominated professional context, using the College VLE and other online resources as appropriate Demonstrate skills in planning, evaluating and initiative Appraise creative leadership skills and their application in the work-related context

6 Work-related Learning: Projects Best of Young Jazz (BOYJ) Project Brass Extravaganza - North West Brass Ensemble: promoting/ organising concert in collaboration with Sale Salvation Army Chamber Concerts, masterclasses and workshops in Portugal: planning, liaison and delivery Children’s University: presentations to young people in Bolton in collaboration with Children’s University Commission from Youth Band to write a piece: workshops in improvisation and using ideas in composition

7 Work-related Learning: Projects/ cont. Conducting Project: Manchester Cathedral Choir Early Years interactive workshops/ performance: Eric Carle story Little Red Riding Hood – new music for existing short film, organisation and performance at local school Twitchy Fingers (Sax Quartet): commissioning new works; getting gigs Seashell Trust (formerly Royal Schools for the Deaf): interactive workshops Yoga project: working with musicians and getting feedback
