ACTS n SUMMARY: The story of Christians from the resurrection of Christ to the first missionary efforts primarily by Peter and Paul the Apostles. Written by Luke.

Acts chapters 1 to 7 The establishment of the church in JERUSALEM

SIMPLE OUTLINE OF CHAPTER ONE A) 1:1-11; The resurrection of Jesus and his dealing with the disciples. B) 1:12-26; The waiting of the apostles and the choosing of Mathias.

The Eleven Apostles Wait for the Holy Spirit Chapter 1: GETTING READY FOR THE KINGDOM TO COME nJnJnJnJesus tells the eleven apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the supernatural power He had promised that would usher in the promised Kingdom (Mark 9:1) and remind them of everything He had taught them, guide them into all truth and serve as an Additional Witness to their words by enabling them to perform wonders and signs to confirm the word.

THE PROMISED POWER n The “Power from on High,” this Powerful Witness and Guide, was the Holy Spirit (John 14-16; Mark 16:17-20; Acts 5:32; Hebrews 2:1-4). n Jesus had promised that with the coming of this Power the Kingdom would come in the lifetime of the apostles (Mark 9:1). n Before the New Testament had been completed the miracles were necessary to confirm the spoken word (Hebrews 2:1-4). n The “Power from on High,” this Powerful Witness and Guide, was the Holy Spirit (John 14-16; Mark 16:17-20; Acts 5:32; Hebrews 2:1-4). n Jesus had promised that with the coming of this Power the Kingdom would come in the lifetime of the apostles (Mark 9:1). n Before the New Testament had been completed the miracles were necessary to confirm the spoken word (Hebrews 2:1-4).

GETTING READY Large upper room in the old city of Jerusalem n On one of the ten days between the Ascension and the outpouring or baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Promised Power, the Apostles in a group of 120 disciples met to appoint an Apostle to take the place of Judas who had committed suicide. n It was important to begin the gospel’s work among the Jews with no fewer and no more than twelve Apostles of Christ. n On one of the ten days between the Ascension and the outpouring or baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Promised Power, the Apostles in a group of 120 disciples met to appoint an Apostle to take the place of Judas who had committed suicide. n It was important to begin the gospel’s work among the Jews with no fewer and no more than twelve Apostles of Christ.

TO THEOPHILUS n Acts 1:1-2 n 1:1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. n Acts 1:1-2 n 1:1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. THEOPHILUS LUKE’S SPONSOR or PATRON or PATRON

TO THEOPHILUS v1 Luke actually refers to his account AS A TREATISE Luke refers to his account of the gospel as a record of what Jesus DID and TAUGHT

“MOST EXCELLENT – (KRATISTOS) THEOPHILUS” n Here Luke refers to his gospel which he had addressed to the same person. n In the gospel he had addressed him as “Most excellent Theophilus” (Luke 1:3), a title of respect usually given to a person of high political power in the Greco-Roman world. n “Theophilus” “Theo” - God and “philus” means “one who loves God.” or “friend of God”. n Here Luke refers to his gospel which he had addressed to the same person. n In the gospel he had addressed him as “Most excellent Theophilus” (Luke 1:3), a title of respect usually given to a person of high political power in the Greco-Roman world. n “Theophilus” “Theo” - God and “philus” means “one who loves God.” or “friend of God”.

1:2 we learn That Luke’s account ends with two significant events 1) Christ giving the great commandment or commission to his Apostles 2) His ascension back into heaven

Promise of Holy Spirit The PROMISE given to the APOSTLES Acts 1:3-8

THE POST-RESURRECTION FORTY DAYS n Acts 1:3-4 n 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

v3 Many infallible proofs INFALLIBLE That which could not deceive That which could not be mistaken How were they infallible? 1) The Apostles saw Jesus various times and places at which there could be no deception. 2) The apostles did not expect the resurrection John 20:25; Luke 24:1-4, 19-24;

3) They were intimately familiar with Jesus after being with Him for three years. 4) He appeared to all eleven of the apostles. 5) Jesus appeared to them for forty days after His resurrection.

n The twelve Apostles were the primary witnesses of everything Jesus had done in His entire ministry, all of them having been with Him through that whole time. n They had heard all His teachings, witnessed His miracles, the greatest of which was His resurrection from the dead. n They are the final authorities on Jesus. n In many of their letters, written in their lifetimes, they refer to the most important facts recounted in the gospels (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). n The twelve Apostles were the primary witnesses of everything Jesus had done in His entire ministry, all of them having been with Him through that whole time. n They had heard all His teachings, witnessed His miracles, the greatest of which was His resurrection from the dead. n They are the final authorities on Jesus. n In many of their letters, written in their lifetimes, they refer to the most important facts recounted in the gospels (1 Corinthians 15:3-8).

THE FORTY DAYS n After His resurrection Jesus had appeared among the Apostles and others on many occasions over a forty-day period, performing further miracles and teaching the eleven Apostles and disciples more about the coming spiritual kingdom. n Both Luke and John give detailed accounts of this period. n After His resurrection Jesus had appeared among the Apostles and others on many occasions over a forty-day period, performing further miracles and teaching the eleven Apostles and disciples more about the coming spiritual kingdom. n Both Luke and John give detailed accounts of this period.

THE RESURRECTION is the SOLID FOUNDATION OF the APOSTLES LIFE and TEACHING

JESUS AND HIS KINGDOM THE CHURCH THE KINGDOM OF GOD are the “called out ones” VISIBLE BODY of CHRIST ON EARTH

THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT PROMISED THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT PROMISED n Acts 1:4-5 n 4 On one occasion, while He was eating with THEM, he gave THEM this command: n "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which YOU have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days YOU will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.“ n Luke 24:49; John 14:26; n Acts 1:4-5 n 4 On one occasion, while He was eating with THEM, he gave THEM this command: n "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which YOU have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days YOU will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.“ n Luke 24:49; John 14:26;

Promise of Holy Spirit SO DO NOT DEPART FROM JERUSALEM. WHY? BUT WAIT for THE PROMISE which YOU HEARD FROM ME

THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT PROMISED to the APOSTLES THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT PROMISED to the APOSTLES Matthew 26:20-21; one of you will betray me John 13:1-4, 21; one of you will betray me Promise of Holy Spirit to the APOSTLES John 13:6,23,25,36; John 14:5,8,22,26;

Promise of Holy Spirit to the APOSTLES ALL these passages show that the context is the betrayal of Jesus and those present in all these passages are the APOSTLES THEREFORE THE CONCLUSION OUGHT TO BE THAT THE PROMISE OF BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS INTENDED FOR THE APOSTLES NOT FOR EVERYONE

n The twelve Apostles were the only disciples promised the baptism in the Holy Spirit. n Verse 2 of this chapter says Jesus gave these instructions to the Apostles. n He told the same group, now eleven with Judas dead, but would be twelve when the day came, that when they received power from above n they were to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samarian and then to the farthest reaches of the earth (Luke 24:45-49; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). n The twelve Apostles were the only disciples promised the baptism in the Holy Spirit. n Verse 2 of this chapter says Jesus gave these instructions to the Apostles. n He told the same group, now eleven with Judas dead, but would be twelve when the day came, that when they received power from above n they were to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samarian and then to the farthest reaches of the earth (Luke 24:45-49; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).

n The coming of the Holy Spirit into the world as Jesus had promised, which is here described as a Baptism in the Holy Spirit brought with it miraculous power to those who received it. n The Apostles were the only ones who received this baptism in the Holy Spirit on this Day of Pentecost and only they could pass the power on to others by laying their hands on them personally. n This we see clearly inferred from what happened in Acts 8:14-19 (See Acts 6:6). n The coming of the Holy Spirit into the world as Jesus had promised, which is here described as a Baptism in the Holy Spirit brought with it miraculous power to those who received it. n The Apostles were the only ones who received this baptism in the Holy Spirit on this Day of Pentecost and only they could pass the power on to others by laying their hands on them personally. n This we see clearly inferred from what happened in Acts 8:14-19 (See Acts 6:6).

The HOLY SPIRIT Would teach the apostles ALL THINGS He would bring to the APOSTLES remembrance ALL things that Jesus said to them previously John 14:26

The HOLY SPIRIT would TESTIFY of Jesus and the APOSTLES would bear WITNESS of the CHRIST John 15:26-27 HE would GUIDE the APOSTLES into ALL TRUTH. John 16:13 My WORD is TRUTH John 17:17

Promise of Holy Spirit The HOLY SPIRIT would also do the following! HE would GUIDE the APOSTLES into ALL TRUTH. John 16:13

Promise of Holy Spirit HE would TELL the APOSTLES things to COME in the FUTURE John 16:13 The HOLY SPIRIT would also CONVICT the world of SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS and JUDGEMENT. John 16:7-14

Acts 1:5 Clothed with power from on HIGH Luke 24:49

Acts 1:5 John’s BAPTISM A COMMANDMENT of God Luke 7:29-30

Acts 1:5 John’s BAPTISM Part of PREPERATION of the COMING of the Christ John 1:33; Luke 3:3-6

Acts 1:5 John’s BAPTISM ADMINISTERED by JOHN Mark 1:5

Acts 1:5 John’s BAPTISM THOSE who RECEIVE IT were REPENTANT JEWS Mark 1:5

Acts 1:5 John’s BAPTISM baptism in WATER baptism in WATER John 1:26 An IMMERSION Mark 1:10 John 3:23

Acts 1:5 John’s baptism was REPLACED By Baptism in THE NAME OF THE FATHER SON AND HOLY SPIRIT Acts 19:1-5

Baptism of Holy Spirit Acts 1:5 BUT YOU SHALL BE Baptized with the HOLY SPIRIT

Baptism of Holy Spirit It was promised to a small group of people Acts 1:2 The APOSTLES who he had chosen

Baptism of Holy Spirit It was promised to a small group of people Acts 1:3 The APOSTLES To whom he presented himself alive

Baptism of Holy Spirit It was promised to a small group of people Acts 1:4 The APOSTLES To whom he said WAIT in Jerusalem UNTIL you receive

Baptism of Holy Spirit It was promised to a small group of people Acts 2:4, 14 The APOSTLES Who began to speak in other LANGUAGES as a result of receiving this baptism See 2:43; 4:43; 5:12; 2 Corinthians 12:12;

Baptism of Holy Spirit So we see that the Christ promised this to His apostles and they RECEIVED that which Jesus had promised them

Matthew 3:4 Two Baptisms described

Matthew 3:1-12 1) Baptism of fire eternal punishment in Hell eternal punishment in Hell 2) Baptism of the Holy Spirit promised and given to the Apostles in Acts 2:1-4 promised and given to the Apostles in Acts 2:1-4

Matthew 3:1-12 1) Baptism of fire eternal punishment in Hell eternal punishment in Hell MANY WRONGLY WANT TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF FIRE TODAY

Matthew 3:1-12 It is important to NOTICE that Jesus NOT man was to be the one who would ADMINISTER BOTH Baptisms described

Matthew 3:1-12 This means that NO MAN COULD OR WOULD ADMINISTER BAPTISM of the HOLY SPIRIT Then or now
