The Holy Spirit “Not Yet Given” A Study of the Giving of the Holy Spirit 1

The Promise of the Spirit “ Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. ” (John 7:37–39, NASB95) 2

When was the Spirit given? Who received the Spirit? Why was the Spirit given? How does this effect us today? The Promise of the Spirit 3

After Jesus was “glorified” When was the Spirit Given? 4

“These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.” (John 12:16, NASB95) When was the Spirit Given? “Glorified” refers to the Cross 5

“And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:23–24, NASB95) When was the Spirit Given? “Glorified” refers to the Cross 6

After Jesus was “glorified” Joel 2:28-32 serves as the prophetic background of John 7 When was the Spirit Given? 7

“It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the L ORD comes. “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the L ORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the L ORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the L ORD calls.” (Joel 2:28–32, NASB95) When was the Spirit Given? 8

Joel 2:28-32 “I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh” “Whosever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered” John 7:37-39 “From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water” “He who believes in Me” 9

After Jesus was “glorified” Joel 2:28-32 serves as the prophetic background of John 7 The Promise was fulfilled on Pentecost When was the Spirit Given? 10

The people recognized the sign being performed vs. 6-8 They heard the Apostles “speaking of the mighty deeds of God” vs. 11 They were amazed by what they witnessed vs. 12 The Spirit Given on Pentecost “but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;” (Acts 2:16–17, NASB95) 11

Who Received the Spirit? Apostles Cornelius Believers Acts 2:1-4 Mark 16:16-20 Acts “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” (John 7:38–39, NASB95) 12

Who Received the Spirit? Apostles Cornelius Believers Acts 2:1-4 Mark 16:16-20 Acts Received the Spirit as a Comforter enabling them to carry out their commission (Jn 14:25,26; 15:26,27; Jn 16:7-13; Acts 1:1-8) 13

Who Received the Spirit? Apostles Cornelius Believers Acts 2:1-4 Mark 16:16-20 Acts Received the “gift of the Spirit” before baptism Received the Spirit “without hands” 14

Who Received the Spirit? Apostles Cornelius Believers Acts 2:1-4 Mark 16:16-20 Acts The Samaritans Acts 8:5-19 The Ephesian Disciples Acts 19:5,6 Not all who were baptized 15

Who Received the Spirit - Believers Heard Christ preached vs. 5 Believed and were baptized vs. 12 Did not receive the Spirit until Apostles laid hands on them vs “ But when they believed Philip preaching the good news … they were being baptized… Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. ” (Acts 8:12–16, NASB95) 16

Who Received the Spirit - Believers Baptized in the name of Jesus vs. 5 Received the Spirit when Paul laid hands on them vs. 6 “When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.” (Acts 19:5–6, NASB95) 17

Who Received the Spirit - Believers “The called of Jesus Christ” vs. 6 Had been baptized Rom 6:3 Yet Paul needed to impart some spiritual gift “For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;” (Romans 1:11, NASB95) 18

Why was the Spirit Given? To Authorize “You are witnesses of these things. “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:48–49, NASB95) 19

Why was the Spirit Given? To Authorize “He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:7–8, NASB95) 20

Why was the Spirit Given? To Authorize “And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith.” (Acts 15:8–9, NASB95) 21

Why was the Spirit Given? To Authorize To Demonstrate “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:17–18, NASB95) 22

Why was the Spirit Given? To Authorize To Demonstrate “Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them. The crowds with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing.” (Acts 8:4–6, NASB95) 23

Why was the Spirit Given? To Authorize To Demonstrate To Convince “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me…” (John 16:8–10, NASB95) 24

Convinced not Overwhelmed Not referring to baptism “in” the Spirit but “by” the Spirit Indicates the “convincing” accomplished through the Gospel The Corinthians were saved when the Gospel was presented and “hearing believed and were baptized” (Acts 18:8) “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13, NASB95) 25

Mark 16Joel 2John 7 The Gospel: Believe and be baptized vs. 16 “Call on the name of the Lord” vs. 32 “Come unto me, and drink” vs. 27 The Demonstration: “These signs shall follow them” vs. 17 “Pour out My Spirit” vs. 28 “rivers of living water“ vs. 37 The Purpose: “confirming the word with signs” vs. 20 “wonders and signs” Acts 2:19 Salvation by H.S. Baptism??? Or Belief in the Gospel 26
