Take it easy. Say “Ah…ah”. Ok. That’s all. Alice: What’s the matter? Doctor: I’m happy to say there’s nothing serious. I’m going to prescribe some painkillers for you. What’s more, you’d better drink plenty of water, eat more fruit and vegetables. Alice: But how often should I take the painkillers? 8 Page  8 My Way of Life Ten years ago, I was very fit. I cycled to work and got a lot of exercise at the weekend. I played tennis a lot and went for long walks. In those days I didn’t get a good job and I didn’t earn much. However, I had a lot of time to do what I enjoyed doing. Five years ago, I got a much better job. The better was the pay, the lazier I became. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to have dinner, so I started to put on weight. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at the weekend because I didn’t want to do the things like that any more. The more stress there was in my job, the more bad habits I formed. For example, no sooner had I got home than I started smoking and drinking.

9 Page  9 Two years ago, I suffered from a heart attack. At first, I couldn’t believe it. “I’m too young.” I said to myself. Luckily, it wasn’t very serious. I was in hospital for two weeks and took a lot of physical examinations. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and drinking. He also told me to keep on a diet and get more exercise. How terrible my way of life was! I followed the doctor’s advice. I gave up my bad habits and started to do the same things as I did ten years ago. In the morning, I got up early, ran to the park, breathe fresh air, and did physical exercise. Then I walked to work, and had a balanced diet containing some milk, fruit, vegetables, eggs, lean meat, and fish. In the evening, I danced or practiced Tai Chi with my neighbors. At the weekend, I played tennis or swam in the gym. Yesterday, I took a physical examination again. I’m in good health now! I’ll keep on my healthy way of life to enjoy my work and life.

12 Page  12 1. The better was the pay, the lazier I became. (1) “the more…, the more” 句型常表示 “ 越 …… 就越 ……” ,是一个复合句 。 其中,前面的句子是状语从句,后面的句子是主句。 the 用在形容词或副 词的比较级前, more 代表形容词或副词的比较级。 (2) 主、从句的时态常用一般现在时或一般过去时。如: The more she learns, the more she wants to learn. The more stress there was in my job, the more bad habits I formed. The harder you work, the greater progress you will make.

13 Page  13 2. no sooner had I got home than I started smoking and drinking. (1) “no sooner…than…” I had no sooner reached home than it began to rain. (2) No sooner 〖 WW( 〗 … 〖 WW) 〗 than 〖 WW( 〗 … No sooner had I reached home than it began to rain. 。 如 : We had hardly got there when it began to rain. = Hardly had we got there when it began to rain.
