6. A fire broke out in the Seih Sou forest on Friday, August 26th 2011, at 14:20. The reason? Dried grass as there had been no rain for at least 2 months. Seaplanes, firefighters and volunteers fought for 5 hours to restrict the fire, as a great forest in the region of Thessaloniki was heading straight to total destruction. For years we have been complaining that the forest of Seih Sou needs people to look after it every day and not just occasionally. The club “The Union” calls the municipalities of the area to take up the forest’s protection, as it is the only one close to our city. It is worth noting that in July 1997 a conflagration broke out, and 55% of the forest’s spread was burnt. The burnt trees were restored by the Forestry Services and other sectors.

9. Thermaikos Gulf: Volunteers cleaned Kappa coast – actions have taken place under the motto: «To swim with our friends and not with our litter»

10. The cleaners of the Municipality of Thessaloniki had a long strike 6 months ago due to the fact that they had not been paid for their overtime. These were the results.Fotrunately they stopped.

11. As long as recycling is concerned, the Association of Local Authorities of Thessaloniki have organized two programs in order to motivate the citizens’ ecological conscience.

12. The first program aims to promote recycling in schools. The students are encouraged to use the special bins for recycling paper, plastic, batteries and electric/electronic devices.

13. The second one promotes recycling in summer camps. Through this program campers learn to recycle their litter instead of leaving it out in the nature.
