7 Insulation Life vs. Voltage Across the Barrier
Lifetime is addressed by the manufacturers. Each material has its own model for long term degradation. The SiO2 fits one curve, the polyimide follows a different curve. This shows that lifetime of each of these technologies is adequate at the voltages of interest. Be careful not to misapply modeling predictions Note Polyimide has vastly better lifetime with unipolar use. 3 orders of magnitude for standard couplers. This means tha they can be used at very high dc voltages. Polyimide Lifetime with 400Vrms is Greater than 50 Years Lifetime at Working Voltage is Extrapolated from Empirical Data Chart is worst case AC bipolar for Polyimide, DC and Unipolar AC is better 7

Nearly always defined as 50-60hz sine wave. This is used as the primary assembly line test for checking isolation integrity. Allowd to use 120% of rated for 1 second to speed up test. Almost always specified as Vrms, but offten used as peak so both are used. Be careful when comparing RMS and Peak voltages, they are done as AC and it is simply picking off a different number for each Vpeak is the same as 2800Vrms. Working voltage speced as RMS and used that way. This is the voltage that the part will withstand for perminatn use. Usually ~50 years. This number is tied up with insulation lifetime. Does not include non repetitive transients. Surge, is a test for non repetitive transients different specificatin treat spec it and measure it very differntly This is the common wavefor for line surge. Telecom has a different one Insulation lifetime, how long will it work at the working voltage.
