István Dobó He was born in Szerednye in 1502. Dobó was the son of Domokos Dobó, who married Zsófia (Sophie) Cékei in 1498. There were six children from the marriage: Ferenc, László, István, Domokos, Anna and Katalin. Szerednye

Dobó was a member of the Hungarian land- owning nobility, with holdings in northern Hungary. The Castle of Eger
István Dobó Dobó became the commander of the Castle of Eger in 1549. He became famous as a result of his successful defense of the C astle during the Siege of Eger in 1552. The Castle of Eger
The battle of Eger In 1552 the Turks attacked Eger. The battle lasted for 38 days. The battle of Eger
The Hungarian army's leader was Dobó. Many people fought in the battle, and there were a lot of women, too.
Women of Eger Women of the Castle became famous, because of their brave behaviour in the fight. This picture shows women in the heat of the battle. The title of the picture is ‘Egri Nők’ (Women of Eger) and was painted by Mihály Munkácsy, a famous Hungarian painter. Egri Nők (Women of Eger)

Egri Csillagok – The Eclipse of the Crescent Moon There is a book about the battle called: The Eclipse of the Crescent Moon, by Géza Gárdonyi, which is a compulsory reading in the 6th grade of the primary school. Eger’s hero István Dobó was Eger’s hero as he defended the Castle. He donated lands for the poor. In Hungary many streets are named after him. In Eger the people set up a statue to his honor.
