Ferenc Deák and his life By Lilla Máté & Anna Bek ő
His life He was born on 17 October 1803 and lived in Söjtör. He was the seventh child of his family. His parents belonged to the Hungarian nobility.
His family His mother died in childbirth. The young Deák reminded his father of this painful event so he sent him to his uncle to bring him up.
Studies He was clever, serious and reserved. He began his studies in small rural schools. Later he went to well known secondary schools and law university.
Deák the Politician He first went into politics in 1833. He was involved in the creation of the 1839–40 laws of the Assembly and became honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
His friends He had only a few real friends: Mihály Vörösmarty (a poet, the writer of the Szózat), Miklós Wesselényi (a famous nobleman) and Ferenc Kölcsey (another poet, the writer of the National Anthem of Hungary).
Why was he an icon for Hungarians? He was always faithful to Hungary and fought for the rights of the Hungarians.
Deák can be seen in one of the Hungarian banknotes
His funeral His funeral was as grandiose as a royal funeral. Many people took part in it and saluted to the Wise Man of the Country. He died on 28 January 1876.
