5 Portland Bridge The Portland Bridge is also known as the Arrigoni Bridge. It was named after Senator Charles Arrigoni, chairman of the bridge building committee.

6 Connecticut River Early settlers depended on the river for transportation. Now the river is used for fishing and boating.

7 Middletown Police Department Who is the Chief of Police? About 100 officers are employed at the Police Department. Three police dogs are used with the officers.

9 Riverside Cemetery Riverside Cemetery is located on the corner of Washington Street and Vine Street. The Wagunks Indians settled on Riverside Cemetery for several reasons. One reason was it was hard for enemies to fight uphill. Another reason is the Wangunks could see for a long distance away in case enemies were coming.

10 Russell Library Mrs. Samuel Russell purchased the Church of the Holy Trinity. It became Middletown’s first public library. The library is dedicated to the memory of Samuel Russell by his wife.

17 Bielefield Bielefield is located on Maynard Street. Bielefield is named after Frederick Bielefield who was the mayor in Middletown from 1926 to 1934.

18 Farm Hill Farm Hill School is located on Ridge Road. The original Farm Hill was located a hill and in a farming community so that is a possible reason for its name.

19 Lawrence The Lawrence School was named after Anne, Mary and Ruth E. Lawrence who taught in Middletown from 1921-1965. It is located on Kaplan Drive.

20 Macdonough Macdonough School is located at 66 Spring Street. Macdonough School is named after Commodore Macdonough who was sailed and defended our country in war.He was a Middletown resident.

21 Moody Moody School is located on 300 Country Club Road.

22 Snow Snow School is located on 299 Wadsworth Street. Snow School was named after Wilbert Snow who was a governor of Connecticut and a poet.

23 Spencer Spencer School is located on 207 Westfield Street. Originally named West Side Elementary School. Spencer School was renamed in 1955 to honor Bertrand Spencer a prominent attorney and mayor of Middletown.

24 Wesley Wesley school is located on Wesleyan Hills Road. Wesley is named after Vivan Wesley who was a lifelong resident of Middletown and a reading consultant in the Middletown School System.

25 Keigwin 6 th grade students go to Keigwin Keigwin is located on 99 Spruce Street.

26 Woodrow Wilson Middle School Woodrow Wilson Middle School was named after Woodrow Wilson, professor at Wesleyan and our 28 th President of the United States. 7 th and 8 th grade students attend the Middle School. It is located on Wilderman’s Way. Lowry Wilderman was a Social Studies Teacher in Middletown.

27 Middletown High School Middletown High School is located on Hunting Hill Avenue. Students in grades 9,10,11 and 12 go there. The first high school in the state was located in Middletown.

28 Private High Schools in Middletown Xavier High School is a private catholic high school. Boys in grades 9,10,11 and 12 go there. Xavier is located on Randolph Road.

29 Private High Schools in Middletown Mercy is a private catholic high school. Girls in grades 9,10,11 and 12 go there. Mercy is located on Randolph Road.

31 Wesleyan University Wesleyan is private liberal arts and sciences university. It serves 2,700 undergraduates and 150 graduates. It was founded in 1831. 48 students and 3 professors made up the faculty and students. In 1831 it cost $36 a year.

32 Middlesex Community College Middlesex Community College is located on Training Hill Road. It is a two year college that offers a variety of degree programs.
