2 Testbeds and Innovation Testbeds share costs over many projects: –Facility costs –Consenting costs Investment increases rapidly at higher TRL –Need a full range of facilities to justify investment at pre- commercial scales Proof of Concept Laboratory testing

3 Need Full Range of Testbeds Full-scale commercial demonstration testbeds –Eg EMEC Proof of concept laboratory testbeds –Eg QinetiQ Ocean Basin Lack of testbeds for pre- commercial trials: Easily accessible Modest deployment costs

4 Value of Testbeds and their International Use Technical risk reduction –Increases confidence in performance to attract international investor interest –Testbed use also brings access to new technical skills –Addresses pre-commercial risk at costs consistent with pre-commercial funding levels Market risk reduction –Testbed specifications typically reflect regional deployment requirements –Testbed use secures interest of customers who recognise particular testbed quality –Testbed use supports membership of regional clusters, and access to potential partners/joint venturers
