DSI Options for MATS Compliance Pat Mongoven ARIPPA Aug 2013

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 2 MATS Acid Gas Requirements SO 2 < 0.2 lbs/MMBtu or HCl < 0.002 lbs/MMBtu Can you meet MATS with just more stone? What other options do you have? If so – what will it cost? – Stone Cost? – Fuel Cost to Calcine? – Can you get the additional stone/fuel out of the bed fast enough? – O & M Costs (more handling, grinding, etc)?

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 3 CFB Boiler – General Schematic hydrate injection locations 110 MW’s Foster Wheeler Waste coal fuel Limestone in boiler with coal Tubular Airheater Baghouse for particulate collection No FGD Injection locations Prior to Airheater Coal feeders - SO 2 (FSI) Baghouse inlet - HCl (DSI)

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 4 Furnace Sorbent Injection location For SO2 Capture Coal Feed Hydrate Feed

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 5 MATS Target SO2 lbs/MM Btu Lbs/hr Hydrate Test Data 4/2013

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 6 CFB Test Data 8/14/2013 0.15 lbs/MMBtu FSI Started 0.35 lbs/MMBtu 108 MW’s 1,500 lbs/hr hydrate 27,000 lbs/hr stone

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 7 CFB Boiler – Burner Injection location For SO2 Capture Why does hydrate & stone work better than stone alone ?? Stone CaCO 3 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 HEAT +

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 8 CFB Boiler – Burner Injection location For SO2 Capture Why does hydrate & Stone work better than stone alone ?? Stone CaCO 3 Gypsum CaSO 4 HEAT Hydrate Ca(OH) 2 HEAT + SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 SO 2 Lime CaO Gypsum CaSO 4 + VERY high surface area CaO VERY high surface area CaO Lime CaO SO 2 Stone CaCO 3 HEAT + Lime CaO

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 9 CFB Boiler – Burner Injection location For SO2 Capture Why does hydrate & Stone work better than stone alone ?? Is a “Steel Curtain” Or Stone Enough ??

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 10 CFB Boiler – Burner Injection location For SO2 Capture Why does hydrate & Stone work better than stone alone ??

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 11 CFB Boiler - Baghouse Inlet injection location For HCl Capture Temperature ~ 350 0 F Hydrate Feed

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 12 HCl Control with Hydrated Lime Reactivity (thermodynamic): – SO 3 > SO 2 > HF > HCl (thermodynamic) Kinetic (collisions) are critical – Distribution in duct is key to good removal rates – In flight capture – Good coating on baghouse bags

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 13 Full Scale CFB for HCl (2012 – just redone & awaiting lab results) (If you’d like an update when the lab work is completed, just leave me a business card)

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 14 Hydrated Lime - Recommended System Variable speed feed blower Use Air-to-air heat exchanger for temperature control Myrlen air sweeps on cone of weigh bin Drop Through Rotary Valve Hydrate: Air > 0.6 lbs hyd:lb air – Pickup velocity >3000 ft/min Minimal bends; smooth unions Piping/Lance diameter > 1.25” Capital Costs ~ $1.5 - $2.0MM

Mississippi Lime – Confidential Information 15 Waste Coal CFB Summary Hydrated lime can achieve MATS compliance in EITHER HCl or SO 2. Removal of SO 2 was better at the higher furnace temperatures - FSI Removal of HCl was better at the lower temperature injection point (pre-bag house) - DSI Hydrate did not have any negative effect on Bag House or fly ash. Lowest cost MATS compliance – HCl or SO 2 ?? Will be plant specific. Mississippi Lime has a production facility in Weirton WV & we’d be happy to talk with ARIPPA members about future testing to better understand economics of hydrate feed for MATS compliance.
