1 SPITTING: Rude behaviour, or biological warfare Actinomyces is a normal part of our oral flora. It must first gain access to the body’s tissues in order to cause disease Cervicofacial infections usually occur following an injury to the mouth (e.g. dental work) Thoracic infections occur as a result of infections material from the teeth being aspirated

2 Is this why Dr. Colby won’t kiss me? Abdominal infection is associated with surgery, trauma and acute perforative gastrointestinal disease Female pelvic infections have been associated with IUD’s in recent years. BOTTOM LINE: As long as you don’t have any extra holes in your body, actinomyces isn’t a real problem. If it finds a way in though, watch out boy, cause you’ve got problems

3 Nocarida is like “the Man”, it’s everywhere Found in soil (not dirt, soil) and organic material all over the world Infection is usually the result of inhalation of airborne bacteria or through an open wound

4 Is everyone as vulnerable to Nocardia as they are to “the Man”? Although a few cases of nacardiosis have been diagnosed in non-immunocompromised individuals, in the vast majority of cases it is associated with an immune dysfunction (either primary or secondary. Yeah, that’s right, I’m bringing in material from other lectures, so just pipe down about it)
