Credit Recovery A maximum of two units (or subjects) earned in an approved summer school may be counted under the Academic Rule. If a unit (or subject) is repeated in summer school, the higher numerical grade for that unit (or subject) may be used to compute the composite grade average. An accredited correspondence course may be accepted by a school system and be one of the two maximum summer units counted for eligibility purposes. The course must be completed before Sept. 1 Units earned through Credit Recovery may also be among the two maximum summer units counted for eligibility purposes. If Credit Recovery is used to make up Carnegie units, they can only be accepted if they are earned through a State Department of Education-approved program.
Dr. Lemak Award, Leadership Conference 10 Schools Receive 1st Lemak Award The schools—Aliceville, Glencoe, Hackleburg, Hamilton, Hazlewood, Isabella, Lamar County, Lynn, Mount Hope and Sidney Lanier—each will receive a $2,500 grant to use in its athletic program. Sixteen member schools in the AHSAA applied for the need- based grants. The selections were made by a committee comprised of AHSAA Central Board of Control members.
Coaches Education Non-faculty coaches and first-time coaches in the AHSAA are required to take two courses – Coaching Principles (NFHS or ASEP) and Sport First Aid (ASEP or PREPARE) – in the Coaches Education Program, after which they are eligible to apply for a coaches card. The courses are recommended for all other coaches. Courses may be taken for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). All coaches must have an active CPR Certification each year. Note: Each member school must keep on file in the principals office a verification for each coach that has been certified from 2001-02 to the present (course requirements) and a verification of all coaches CPR certification. Coaches at member schools prior to 2001-02 are exempt from the course requirements.
Transfer Rule A student is eligible in the school zone in which his/her parents reside (public, private or parochial schools). Any student who completes one year's attendance at a school outside his/her home school zone and fulfills all other requirements becomes eligible in that school. (This does not apply to foreign exchange students.) A student whose parents make a bona fide move completely out of one school zone into another school zone may transfer all his/her rights and privileges to the member school that serves the area where the parents reside.
Bona Fide Move Rules (It is the new Schools responsibility to verify previous residence.) The following factors are basic guidelines for determining a bona fide move: a. The household furniture of the family must be moved into an unoccupied house or apartment. b. All principal members of the family must reside in the new place of residence c. The original residence should be closed, rented or disposed of and not used by the family. d. Nine months at the new residence will be required to make a move bona fide. Note: If a family moves into a now school zone and remains there for less than nine months, the move will not be considered bona fide and the family's child who is enrolled in the new school zone becomes ineligible there the day the family leaves the new school zone. The student remains ineligible for a full calendar year from the date the family moved out of the new zone. However, if the student did not participate in athletics, the period of ineligibility will be 12 months from the date of the student's enrollment. Custody or legal guardianship set up with anyone will not establish immediate athletic eligibility.
Divorce The eligibility of a student whose parents are divorced is determined by the following: (a) If there has been a divorce or a legal separation in a family and sole or physical custody has been awarded by the court granting the divorce to one of the parents, the athletic eligibility of the student will be established at the school that serves the area where that parent resides. Note: If joint custody has been awarded and a transfer is involved, the student must attend the new school for one year before becoming eligible. (b) If it becomes necessary at a later date for the student to reside with the other parent, the move will be accepted as a bona fide move if the court that granted the divorce changes the custody to this parent. This type of move will be accepted for immediate athletic eligibility purposes only one time. Therefore, if a student subsequently decides to return and reside with the first parent in a different school zone, the student will be ineligible for a period of one year. Custody or legal guardianship assigned to anyone (including relatives) will not establish immediate athletic eligibility.
Use of School Facilities (Offseason) During the school year, exclusive of allowable dates, a school’s gymnasium and other facilities may not be open after school for practice and no balls or equipment of any sport may be used to develop skills. Weight training and conditioning programs are exempt from these restrictions.
Outside Participation Rule A student who is a member of any school athletic team (grades 7-12) may not participate (includes practice) on a non-school team in the same sport during the school season of that sport. Also, a member of any school athletic team may not participate in an outside sport activity in the same sport during the school season of that sport. Private individual instruction is not considered an outside sports activity. A team's season begins the day of that team's first contest and ends when that team's season has been completed. A student who violates this rule becomes ineligible to compete on that school team or in that school sports activity for the remainder of that school season. Any student who participates on an outside team after the school sport season begins is ineligible to join that school team for the remainder of the season.
Coaches Restrictions Roles of Coaches: Outside the sports season during the school year (includes the school day), no coach or non-faculty coach from a school’s staff in any sport may hold organized practice or competition in that sport for students from his/her school or feeder school(s). The only exceptions are the allowable fall evaluation periods for spring sports, the spring evaluation periods for basketball and volleyball and the spring practice periods for football.
Athletic Physical Education Period During an Athletic Physical Education Period, a ball of any sport may be used but no instruction can be given. Athletic PE can not be used as a training ground for athletic competition outside of the sports season.
AHSAA Conduct Rule (Effective 2008-09) Coaches and players that are ejected from contests in all sports will receive the following penalties: First Ejection: Minimum $300 fine. (The fine can be reduced one time to $100 if the person fined completes the STAR Behavioral Mode within 10 days of the date of the ejection.) Second Ejection: Minimum one-game suspension and $500 fine Third Ejection: Minimum suspension for the remainder of the season and $750 fine NOTE: If an ejection occurs during the final contest of the season, a monetary fine will be placed on the school according to its severity and what number of ejection it is.
FINE PAYMENT PROCESS The first step is reporting the violation of ejection to the AHSAA. Step two will be notification from the AHSAA to the school in writing of the ruling and/or fine with an invoice attached. A school has 30 days to pay the fine. If an appeal is made, the fine is still due in the 30-day period with any refund sent to the school if the appeal reverses the decision. If a fine is not paid in 30 days upon notification from the AHSAA, a second letter will be mailed. A school has 10 days from notificaiton in the second letter to pay the fine. If not, then the fine will be doubled.
BEHAVIORAL MODE Provides schools an opportunity to work closely with students with behavior or control problems. Allows schools with sportsmanship violations such as ejections to develop a proactive program and thus reduces fines levied against the schools once completed. If completed within 10 school days the first ejection fine will be reduced from $300 to $100. Real Results Practical Solutions Meaningful Change
Foreign Exchange Students A foreign exchange student attending a member school located in the school zone where the host family resides is eligible to receive a waiver of the Transfer Rule for a period of one year. Foreign Exchange Student Registration (Form 4) 2008-09 CSIET Advisory List (approved Foreign Exchange programs) CAN NOT BE USED AS A RECRUITING TOOL.
Security for Officials, Teams Security should be provided for officials from the time they arrive at the contest site until they depart from the contest site. They should be provided a dressing area away from other contest participants. A uniformed officer or school staff member should escort the officials to and from the provided dressing area to the contest playing area and back. This should be done at the beginning of the contest, during the contest and at the end of the contest.
Assignment of Officials "The AHSAA is adopting a new assignment procedure for officials in the preliminary rounds of all playoffs in every sport. Officials will be assigned from the closest local associations due to the rise in fuel prices. Other considerations on assignments will become secondary to the mileage issues."

Content Management NEW ONLINE REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SPORTS POSTING SCHEDULES Schools must go online to the AHSAA website Member Section and enter season schedules for all sports by the deadline dates listed below for sports in each quarter. Failure to do so will result in a fine of $100 assessed to the school. Schools should go online and make any schedule changes immediately as they occur. Deadlines for posting schedules: March 1 – fall sports (football, volleyball, cross country, swimming) Sept. 15 – winter sports (basketball, wrestling) Jan. 15 – spring sports (baseball, softball, outdoor track, soccer, golf and tennis)
Content Management NEW ONLINE REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SPORTS POSTING SCORES Schools are also required to post scores of contests online immediately following all contests in the regular season (and within 24 hours after regular season tournaments). Results must be posted no later than 30 minutes following a regular season contests. Failure to do so could result in a fine of $25 assessed to the school. In post-season playoffs, failure to report scores in the same manner will result in a $100 fine assessed to the school. Instructions will be posted on the AHSAA website Member Section.
Content Management NEW ONLINE REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION Information pertinent to the championship programs of all sanctioned sports will now be made available on the AHSAA website. All these details previously appeared in the fall, winter and spring sports books which are no longer being published. Details outlining the fall and winter sports will be available online Aug. 1. The spring sports details will be available Sept. 1. Note: The AHSAA Handbook will continue to be published and furnished to all member schools.
BRYANT-JORDAN PROGAM Named for former Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and former Auburn football coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan. This unique program honors 48 regional scholar-athlete winners and 48 student achievement winners – one each from AHSAA’s eight districts in each of six classifications. $700,000 in scholarships to be distributed this year. 1,926 student athletes have received more than $6,690,000 in scholarship assistance. 23 rd annual Awards Banquet and Ceremony was April 14 at Birmingham Sheraton Hotel Ballroom. Nine Alabama colleges and universities participate by offering a total of 19 renewable tuition scholarships to Bryant- Jordan winners.
Sports Declaration 1. Click the Schools link on the left navigation menu on Member School home page. Then click on Invoices/Form 1. 2. The list of schools page will be displayed. Find your school and click on the edit icon (the pencil in the left column) and it will display the school you selected on the screen. 3. Click on the Sports Declarations button located just above the school name. 4. Once the Sports Declaration Page is displayed, examine the sports that are applicable to your school for the 2009-2010 school year. (2009-2010 will appear for all sports). Carefully make sure the appropriate boxes are checked. The sports declaration form has two pages so make sure to click on each page. THIS STEP WILL BE DONE NEXT SPRING WITH A MAY 1 DEADLINE. 5. The sports declarations will automatically roll from one year to the next so insure that any new sports added or old sports dropped are correct. 6. Make all changes for 2009-2010 next spring by May 1. Then hit Update located at the bottom of the screen on the right. 7. Declaration changes for 2008-09 are already made. If any changes are necessary, call the AHSAA office at 334-263-6994 and a staff member will assist you.
Submitting Schedules Posting schedule directions 1. Click on Schedules/Scores link on the left navigation menu on the Member School home page screen. 2. Select the appropriate school from the drop-down menu and click on the name to put name in the field. 3. Select the appropriate sport from the drop-down menu (being careful to note level of competition) and click to put in field. 4. Select the appropriate year from the drop-down menu (being careful to note level of competition) and click to put in the field. 5. Once entered, click on the green button which sends you to Add Schedule pages. 6. Follow directions which are listed below and on website.
Submitting Schedules Add Contest Step 1: Select the desired Opponent(s). Step 2: Select the desired Sport Team. Step 3: Click the "Add Opponent" button. Step 4: Select the school that will be the Home / Host team. Step 5: For each team, select whether the game is "Required", "Designated", or "Not Required“. Step 6: Ensure that the contest site information, date and time are entered correctly. Step 7: Click the "Save" button. If the contest site information is incorrect, please change the information to reflect the location where the contest will be held. You must add one contest at a time and must also make any changes to the schedule immediately when changes occur.
Posting Scores 1. Click on Schedules/Scores link on the left navigation menu the Member School home page screen. 2. Select the appropriate school from the drop-down menu and click on the name to put name in the field. 3. Select the appropriate sport from the drop-down menu (being careful to note level of competition) and click to put in field. 4. Select the appropriate year from the drop-down menu (being careful to note level of competition) and click to put in the field. 5. Click on Record Scores in the last column on the right. 6. Fill in proper fields (score boxes). 7. Save score. THAT’S IT!!!!!
Submitting Rosters 1. Click the Create Roster link on the navigation menu on the left hand side of the screen. The Create Roster page will be displayed. 2. Select your school from the School dropdown menu. 3. Select the sport for the roster you are creating from the Sport dropdown menu. 4. On the left side of the screen, a list of all of the athletes in your school will be displayed. The list of athletes may be filtered by using the Gender, Eligibility, Age or Grade filters. 5. To place an athlete on the roster, select the athlete(s) on the left by checking the box to the left of their name, and then click the green arrow that points to the right. This will move the athlete over to that sport’s roster. 6. If required, enter the Height, Weight and Jersey Number into the appropriate fields. 7. When the roster is complete, the roster can be emailed to anyone desired. In the Email This Roster To field, type the email address of the person you are sending the roster to. Click the Send button. 8. To print this roster at this time, use the email roster feature to email a copy of this roster to your own email account. Then, you can view, print and forward this roster as desired.
