3 TRADITIONAL COSTUME THERE ARE SMART TRADITIONAL CLOTHES OF LITHUANIAN PEASANTS. UNDER HISTORICAL, ECONOMICAL, SOCIAL AND NATURAL CIRCUMSTANCES, CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS THEY FINALY FORMED IN THE MIDDLE OF XIX CENTURY. LITHUANIAN TRADITIONAL COSTUME WAS FORMING ON THE BASIS OF GORGEOUS PEASANTS` COSTUME FROM XIX TO XX CENT.

4 ALL THE FABRICS AND CLOTHES WERE HAND MADE

5 THE GREAT PRIDE OF LITHUANIAN WOMEN WERE STRONG, NICE, CLEAN CLOTHES. BEFORE MARRIAGE GIRLS WEAVED MATERIALS FOR THE WHOLE THEIR LIFE.

8 SHIRTS THIS IS THE MAIN ELEMENT OF TRADITIONAL COSTUME. SHIRTS WERE MADE FROM BLEACHED CANVAS, WIDE, LONG AND WERE WORN AS PETTICOATS. SLEEVES WERE DECORATED WITH WHITE AND RED ORNAMENTS "ZICKAI". SHIRTS WERE LACED OR DONE UP WITH BUTTONS.

10 SKIRTS CASUAL, SMART, UPPER AND UNDERWEAR. THEY WERE WIDE MADE FROM CHECKERED OR STRIPPED WOOLEN MATERIAL. THE SAME TIME WERE WORN 2-3 SKIRTS.

12 APRONS THIS IS IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF TRADITIONAL COSTUME. NOT TO WEAR IT SHOWED INDECENCY AND DISORDERLINESS. APRONS WERE LONG, WIDE AND FOLDED. THE MOST POPULAR WERE WHITE LINEN APRONS, BUT COLORFUL, WITH LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE STRIPES, EMBROIDERED ALSO WERE WORN. WOMEN USED NARROW BELTS FOR WAISTS.

14 WAISTS THIS IS GORGEOUS COSTUME`S ELEMENT MADE FROM THICK SMART MATERIAL, WITHOUT SLEEVES, LONG AND SHORT, DECORATED WITH FOLDS, BOTTONED OR HOOKED UP, LACED WITH CHAINS OR RIBBONS. WAISTS WERE INHERITED FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. WEALTHY PEASANTS WORE FACTORY – PRODUCED WAISTS, POORER – WOOLEN OR HALF WOOLEN HOME MADE WAISTS. WAISTS WERE WORN BY MAN AND WOMEN.

16 MEN'S PANTS PANTS WERE LONG (TO BONES), NOT VERY WIDE, ONE COLOUR OR STRIPED, IN SUMMER TIME – WHITE LINEN, IN WINTER – HALF – WOOLEN. IN KLAIPEDA REGION PANTS LENGHT WAS UP TO KNEES AND MEN WORE THEM WITH LONG KNITTED SOCKS.

18 WOMEN HEAD'S COVERINGS GIRLS AND MARRIED WOMEN HAD DIFFERENT HEAD COVERINGS. THEY DECORATED THEIR HEADS WITH FLOWER WREATHS, STRIPS CROWNS, CAPS, SHAWLS, VEILS ETC.

20 MEN'S HEAD COVERINGS MEN WORE NON COLOURED WOOLEN, FELTED AND FUR CAPS AND HATS. STRAW HAT WAS AN ELEMENT ONLY OF WORKING CLOTHES, IT WASN'T WORN ON FESTIVE OCCASIONS.

22 WOVEN BELTS BELTS ARE IMPORTANT PART OF TRADITIONAL COSTUME. PEOPLE WORE THEM WITH COATS, FUR COATS, SHIRTS, APRONS, VESTS ETC. THEY WERE MADE IN DIFFRENT WAYS AND VERY POPULAR IN WEDDINGS, CRISTENING RITUALS.

25 THE MOST COMMON ORNAMENS AND SYMBOLS

26 THE MOST POPULAR JEWELRY WAS NECKLACE MADE FROM CORAL, AMBER, COLOURED GLASS, PUFFED SILVER. NECKLACES WERE VERY VALUABLE, INHERITED FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION.

27 IN SUMMER TIME WOMEN COVERED THEIR SHOULDERS WITH WHITE LINEN CANVAS, IN WINTER – WOOLEN SHAWLS

28 GLOVES AND SOCKS WERE DIFFERENT – FOR EVERY DAY WEARING – KNITTED WITHOUT PATTERNS, FOR FESTIVE OCCASIONS – PATTERNED. WRISTLETS (SHORT SLEEVES ON THE WRISTS) WERE VERY GORGEOUS, DECORATED WITH DIFFERENT GEOMETRICAL PATTERNS AND SMALL BEADINGS. WERE WORN BY BOTH MEN AND WOMEN.

30 IN ALL REGIONS SMALL BAGS AND BUNDLES WERE USED FOR CARRYING DIFFERENT THINGS. ONLY WOMEN WORE THEM ON THE LEFT SIDE UNDER THE APRON, NICER ONES WERE HELD IN HAND. SOME KIND OF BAG – “DELMONAS” WAS USED ONLY IN KLAIPEDA REGION. “DELMONAS” IS CLOTH BAG, EMBROIDERED WITH GEOMETRICAL OR FLORAL PATTERNS, DECORATED WITH COLOURFUL THREADS AND BEADS.

32 SCARF IS IMPORTANT PART IN MEN'S TRADITIONAL COSTUME, IN PUBLIC PLACES IT WAS NECESSARY ELEMENT. MEN WORE SCARVES ON SHIRTS COVERING THEIR COLLARS.

33 FOOTWEAR THE OLDEST TRADITIONAL FOOTWEAR IN ALL REGIONS WERE: SHOES PLAITED OF STRAWS (“VYŽOS”), MADE OF ANIMAL SKIN (“NAGINĖS”) AND CARVED WOODEN SHOES (“KLUMPES”). WOMEN'S LEATHER SHOES WERE WORN ONLY ON FESTIVE OCCASIONS, NOT EVERY DAY. MEN WORE BROWN OR BLACK LACED BOOTS WITH FLAPS.

35 COATS AND FUR COATS MEN AND WOMEN WORE ROUGH CLOTH COATS PAINTED IN DARK COLOURS. WEALTHY PEOPLE WORE SHEEPSKIN COATS WITH LEATHER BUTTONS.

37 CHILDREN'S TRADITIONAL CLOTHES TILL THE END OF XIX CENTURY THERE WERE NO DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHILDREN'S AND ADULT CLOTHING. CASUAL CLOTHES PEOPLE MADE FROM DATED ADULT CLOTHES, BUT ON FESTIVE OCCASIONS CHILDREN WORE WOOLEN DECORATED AND EMBROIDERED CLOTHES.
