Start with a front cover, add the Subject, Unit and your Name. Establishing a Design Specification Total Marks available for this folio 50 Pass score 30

The first page of this folio should contain a copy of the brief. (0 marks) Problem Description Introduction The DIY outlet B&Q wants to bring out a new Cordless Drill as part of their budget Power Tool Range. The product will be aimed at young home owners in the 25-35 age group. The product will be sold at every B&Q in the country and therefore will have to be mass produced. It is anticipated 10,000 units will be produced

Now choose 5 design factors that you think are important to the design of this product. (0 marks).design factors Give at least 4 reasons why you have chosen each design factor. (18 marks for identifying design factors) Research Methods List how you intent research these design issues (0 Marks) Design Factors Design Factor Reasons for selection Research Method Functiona)I am not sure what a cordless drill should do (Drill but what else?) b) Reason 2 c) Reason 3 d) Reason 4 Look existing products at User Questionnaire Safetya) This is a commercial product and there will be regulations that will have to be followed. b)Reason 2 And so on…………… ……. Internet search to find appropriate regulations

Now you must fully research the design factors identified (24 marks in total for research) Researching Design Factors (Function) Existing Products NuTool NPT18 Cordless Drill £35.24 18 volts. 1.2Ah. Features include a rechargeable battery, electronic speed control, Draper 14.4 volt cordless drill Cost £25.99 Variable speed control 17 position torque control Adaptor/charger Keyless chuck Screwdriver bit storage compartment Supplied complete with one double-ended screwdriver bits, 14.4V battery pack and 230V AC adaptor/charger (3-5 hours) Display packed. Cost £35.99 Variable speed for gentle start, full control and reverse switch for added versatility 5 torque settings for driving various materials and sizes of screws Voltage 14.4 v Chuck keyless Charge time 3 h The research on the left is one way to answer that first question on the previous slide “I am not sure what a cordless drill should do (Drill but what else?)” This information should help you in drawing up a Technical specification of what features the cordless drill should have

(24 marks in total for research ) Researching Design Factors (Safety) The research above shows what can go wrong with poor manufacture……….. The page on the left shows one possible method of researching safety. In this case the internet has been used to search problems other manufacturers have encountered with their Cordless Drills.

(24 marks in total for research ) Researching Design Factors The research method on the left can be used to cover multiple areas including Function, Aesthetics, Cost Durability, Value for Money Materials, (as long as you ask the right questions). User Questionnaire What is your age group 65 Economics 1)How much do you think a budget Cordless Drill should cost? £10-£20 □, £20-£30□, £30-40□, £40-50□ 2) …………… Function 3) What size of chuck should the drill have fitted…………………. 4) ……………… 5) ……………… 6)……………... Aesthetics And so on……………

(24 marks in total for research ) Results of Research (Costs) From looking on the Internet I was able to establish that the price range for Budget Cordless Drills was £26 - £36 This was backed up by the information gathered in question 1 of my user questionnaire As you see from the graph most consumers (in our target age group) would be willing to pay £20 to £30 for a Budget Cordless Drill This establishes your first point on your specification The Cordless Drill Should retail for £30 However if the drill was priced at £30 we would satisfy 79% of our target market

(24 marks in total for research ) Results of Research (Function) From the information gathered in question 3, 4 &5 of my user questionnaire I was able to establish ……………………………… This can be backed up by the following analysis of the questions……………………… This establishes your first point on your specification The Cordless Drill Should retail for between £30

(8 marks in total for specification ) Specification Cost The Cordless Drill must retail for £30 Function The Cordless Drill must…………….

The End

Design factors* Safety Function Aesthetics Cost Durability Value for Money Materials Ergonomics Back *See Textbook Page 14 for a full breakdown of this list

Ergonomics Who is going to use the product? Adults? Children? Male/Female? Are there any specific difficulties that some/all of these users are likely to encounter. Will anthropometric data be required? If so what data? Back

Function What do you expect the product to do? What does the target market expect the product to do? Will the product have more than one function? Do you need to know about the environment the product will be used in? Will the function have any impact on the choice of materials? Will maintenance be an issue? Back

Aesthetics Will the target market expect particular aesthetics? Will the product have to use particular branding Will the product form part of a range of products? Will the product have to fit in to a particular environment? Back

Safety Will the product have to follow commercial regulations? Will the product use electricity/gas or any other hazardous product? Do any of the materials used have to comply with UK / European safety standards ? Who will use the product? Does this have safety implications? Are there any safety considerations relating to the manufacture of the product? Does the client put a premium on safety? Does the product have to be safely disposed of at the end of its expected lifespan? Back

Cost How much does the client want to charge for the product? How much is the target market willing to pay for the product? How much do similar products retail for? How many sales are hoped for? Are there any after sales costs? (servicing etc) that have to be included in the price? What are the costs of the materials and manufacturing processes required? Are there any specific taxes associated with this product (VAT, Environmental taxes etc) Back

Durability How long does the client expect the product to last (planned obsolescence) How long does the target market expect the product to last? Does the lifespan effect the choice of materials or manufacturing techniques? Will the environment effect the products lifespan? Back

Value for Money Will the product be competitively priced? What is the products projected lifespan? How long does the target market expect the product to last? How much profit does the client hope to make? Is the product guaranteed? (for how long) Back

Materials Will the environment have any effect on the choice of materials? Do any of the materials need to be recycled / recyclable? Does the projected lifespan have an effect on the choice on materials. Do the materials need to comply with company branding? Do the materials need to be sourced locally? Are there any Health and Safety concerns associated with the materials. Should the materials be “environmentally friendly” Back
