CAUSES Stats of Fully Developed and Developing country

Developed Country Ex., USA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2004 Prevalence Approximately 1.9% of the U.S. population, or some 5,596,000 people, reported some form of paralysis based on the functional definition used in the survey. Approximately 0.4% of the U.S. population or some 1,275,000 people reported being paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury Causes of Paralysis and Spinal Cord Injury The leading cause of paralysis was stroke (29%), followed by spinal cord injury (23%) and multiple sclerosis (17%). Various types of accidents accounted for the great majority of spinal cord injuries. Courtesy: www.cdc.gov

The number of disabled persons in the country was estimated to be 18.49 million during July to December, 2002. They formed about 1.8 per cent of the total population. About 10.63 per cent of the disabled persons suffered from more than one type of disabilities. For every 100000 people in India, there were 1755 who were either mentally or physically disabled. Among the rural residents, the prevalence of disability was 1.85% and that among the urban, it was 1.50%. The rate for males was 2.12% and 1.67% while that for females was 1.56 and 1.31 per cent in rural and urban India, respectively.

OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT

This project aims at developing a low cost electric wheelchair which is capable of withstanding the rigors of the road of India and modifying a two wheeler available in the market so that electric wheelchair will be an integral part of the two wheeler enabling the paraplegic person to ride on the road. The Project involves making an electric wheelchair which combines an integral part of a two wheeler so that he can just attach his wheelchair to the road going vehicle without getting off of his wheelchair. Thus making him completely independent of any external help. The project will be focused on lowering cost for fabrication part so that if it is manufactured on a large scale, the overall price of the entire unit will be low enabling those physically handicapped people who are cash strapped to purchase the unit.

SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK

Better interface with the controller as the existing system was just an adaptation from an electric cycle kit. Use of joystick with micro-controller controlled movement of the wheelchair will greatly enhance the driving pleasures. Use of alloy rims instead of spoke rims there by reducing the chances of wheel bends. Sliding mechanism for front wheels can be made hydraulic for ease of use The wheelchair can be made suitable for adaptation to all two wheelers in the market.

EXISTING PROBLEMS

Footrest portion Time to assemble with 2 wheeler Universal Design!!!!!!! Expand the adaptability to 4 wheeler
