1 Universal Precautions in the School Setting Mission Statement Mission Statement To improve the quality of life through better health by developing and implementing strategies in the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

2 Guidelines for Handling of General Body Fluids in a School Setting b The body fluids of all persons should be considered potentially hazardous. General body fluids include blood, drainage from cuts, scabs and skin lesions, urine, feces, vomit, nasal discharge and saliva. (General body fluids vary from HIV related body fluids. HIV related body fluids are blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.)

3 Guidelines for Handling of General Body Fluids in a School Setting b b Avoid direct skin contact with body fluids by using gloves. b b Avoid contact with diapers and soiled clothing. b b Use effective hand washing is required. b b Dispose of all soiled contents in plastic bags. b b Use freshly mixed household bleach and water solution for cleaning.

5 Bleach Solution b b Mix as needed : one part bleach and ten parts water; do not store. b b Mix with cold water. b b Keep mixture out of direct light. b b Label clearly and dispose in a secure area.

6 Removing Gloves b b With right hand, pinch palm of glove on left hand and pull left glove down and off fingers. Form left glove into a ball and hold in fist of right hand. b b Insert two (2) fingers of left ungloved hand under inside rim of right glove on palm side; push glove inside out and down onto fingers and over balled left glove. b b Grasp gloves, which are now together and inside out, with left hand and remove from right hand. b b Discard gloves in plastic bag with any used first aid materials and seal bag. b b Wash hands.

7 Hand Washing Procedure Equipment b b Liquid soap b b Paper towels b b Receptacle b b Scrub brush b b Lotion Technique b Wet hands with warm, running water b Apply liquid soap and water b Wash hands, using a circular motion b Rinse & dry hands well b Use paper towel to turn off water b Apply lotion as desired

8 Emergency First-Aid Provide a barrier: b b latex gloves/plastic bags Clean area being treated: b b hydrogen peroxide Cover areas being treated: b b bandages/paper towels

9 Fluid Clean-up Procedure To clean up spills you should: b b use absorbing materials b b use pick-up spatula and brush b b use plastic bag b b apply germicidal detergent b b clean spatula and brush b b dispose all materials b b rinse hands with antiseptic
