For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter A new radiation monitoring badge for emergency and disaster response personnel. RADēCO, Inc.

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter “The survey found that the most significant risk of a WMD attack was from a radiological weapon, or a so-called "dirty bomb," in which radioactive material is put into a conventional explosive device.” Survey of 80 WMD Experts, Commissioned by U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee CNN Special Report, June 22, 2005

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter “There have been plenty of efforts by terrorist smugglers to acquire these nuclear materials. According to the IAEA, between 1993 and 2004, there were 662 confirmed cases of smuggling nuclear and radiological materials, and those were just the cases that we know about. Of those confirmed cases, 21 involved materials that could be used to produce a nuclear weapon, and over 400 involved materials that could be used to make a dirty bomb. It is clear that this threat is very real and deserves our utmost attention.” U.S. Senator Jon Kyl, Chairman, Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security July 27, 2006

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter Known Cases of RDD Plans/Incidents –1987: Iraq tested RDD –1996: RED discovered in Moscow Public Park –2001: Afghanistan war, Al Qaeda plans –2002: Jose Padilla found to have plans –2003: RDD plan uncovered at a university in Canada –2004: Large stockpile of Americium 241 found in London

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter The Need –The first known terrorist plot to attack the United States using a radiological dispersal device (RDD or “dirty bomb”) failed in 2002 when Jose Padilla was arrested. –The first attack on the World Trade Center (1993) also failed, but the second – September 11, 2001 – succeeded. –We know that Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations are persistent and it is a widely held expert opinion that Al Qaeda will commit an RDD attack in the United States eventually.

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter The Problem –Officials recognize that in the event of an RDD emergency, the initial response personnel may not be aware of the radiological nature of the attack. –First responders will need to carry dosimetry at all times in order to be truly prepared.

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter The Options –For this application, thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) will not be adequate because they cannot be read at the scene. –Pocket ionization chambers (PICs) are inexpensive, but require calibration and are notoriously subject to damage by shock. The readings are unreliable due to electrical charge drift and training is required to read them correctly. –Electronic dosimeters are high cost, relatively bulky for a person already carrying a significant amount of equipment, and require calibration and maintenance.

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter Physical Characteristics –Credit card size –Read on site –Maintenance free –No batteries –Waterproof –Color coded readout –Disposable –Wear up to a year

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter Technical Characteristics –Tissue Equivalent –Energy Independent (30 keV – 20 MeV) –Dose-rate Independent –Tolerates intermittent UV exposure (using a UV filter) –Preset calibration –Fully quantitative measurement can be performed –Does not contain any hazardous or toxic materials

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter How It Works –The RADView TM PD dosimeter badge incorporates a self-developing film which provides visual measurement of absorbed radiation dose. –The radiochromic film changes color upon exposure to ionizing radiation, becoming progressively darker in proportion to the absorbed dose. –The user simply matches the color of the sensitive film in the center of the display to the precalibrated comparison backgrounds to assess exposure. –If the sensitive film is darker than the background of a segment, the dose is greater than the number of that segment (“dose is darker”).

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter Illustration 1: 0 remIllustration 2: 5-10 remIllustration 3: rem –In the first illustration, the color of the center is lighter than the 2 dose segment, indicating the dosimeter card has not been exposed to radiation. –In the second illustration, the film in the center is darker than the 5 rem segment and lighter than the 10 rem segment. This indicates the badge has been exposed to a radiation dose between 5 rem and 10 rem. –In the third illustration, the dose is between 25 and 50 rem. Note that the center film is darker than the 25 rem segment and lighter than the 50 rem segment.

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter Why It Works –Originally developed for the medical industry by International Specialty Products, the active component in the dosimeter is a microparticulate, radiation sensitive diacetylene monomer dispersed in a polymer matrix and applied to a polyester film base. –When the active monomer is exposed to ionizing radiation, a polymerization reaction immediately produces an intensely colored dye polymer that darkens the center of the display. –The amount of dye produces is proportional to the radiation dose received. –The dye polymer is cyan blue with a major absorbance peak at 635 nm and a minor peak at 585 nm.

For over 30 years, RADēCO is your “RAdiation Dētection COmpany” RADView TM PD Colorimetric Dosimeter Response to Different Types of Radiation –The RADView TM incorporates a light filter over the front face. This filter allows transmission of a high proportion of photons having an energy >15keV. –This filter will stop all alpha particles and beta particles less than ~150 keV in energy. –Higher energy beta particles and neutrons will penetrate to the sensitive element. Photons or charged particles reaching the sensitive film will cause a dose indication on the badge. –The response to neutrons is negligible.
